[Encore] Questions re ports and Encore

I was trying to remember all of the throes I went through to get our MOO set up so many years ago, and nothing came to mind on this topic. However, I can help out with the "vi" listed in Lennie's response. Unix systems have a text editor called "vi". It is rather cryptic, but one could edit several lines at a time, sort of.

So if there is a file called "options.h" on your winmoo setup, Paul, simply right-click on it and open it with Notepad. Edit it and save it. I'm thinking this may be the fix you need.

Paul,

I don't think you may have to do the dance of setting up your moo locally and then recopying it back to the server.

I opened up my rather dusty copy of High Wired and looked at chapter #5 which has instructions for installing and setting up an enCore MOO (granted it is pre-v5). These instructions hold true for installing on a Unix server, so it may not help you Paul since I think you said that you were using winmoo.

Anyway, on page 118 there is a section on "Compiling the Server." It talks about "configuring" the script which makes a file called config.h. "The config.h file holds vital information about the types of networking that the MOO will be using..." It also mentions "you should edit the options.h file to open up outbound network connections from the MOO." This would seem to include telnet ports, I would think.

In the book it describes accessing this file:

(remember, this is for unix)
cd MOO-1.8.0.p (changes directory to where the moo server files are located)
vi options.h (I'm not sure what the "vi" program is, but it opens the interface for editing the options.h file)

I'm not sure what the equivalent for winmoo would be or how you might get to this options.h file. How's your DOS?

I may be completely off, but it seems like you might be able to find the place where the default setting is for telnet access on port 7777 and change it to 3333.

It is at time like these that I wish Jan Rune were still around...

(Lennie glances toward Clemson with a faint hope Cynthia is listening)

I found this line from the " I am connected to my MOO, what should I do first? "
section of the Wizard Basics site (http://moo.kcc.hawaii.edu/%7Emoo/MOO/files/documentation/wizbasics.html#winMOO <http://moo.kcc.hawaii.edu/%257Emoo/MOO/files/documentation/wizbasics.html#winMOO> )
" If you decided to use another port than 7777 (defined in your options.h file when compiling), it is a good idea to update the changes here as well."

So I think I am on track about your solution being able to modify that options.h file. Now how to actually modify it is something others may be able to help you with.

Good luck!

Lennie

I found a free host.

Installed Lambda Moo and Encore 5 db.
When I started it, I used
......public_html/encore/bin$<mailto:basil at mcp-server:%7E/public_html/encore/bin$> ./moo encore.db 3333

It did it's thing, but came up with:

Oct 26 17:33:21: LISTEN: #0 now listening on port 7777
Oct 26 17:33:21: LISTEN: #32 now listening on port 7000
MY questions are, does it always open these ports?

Can I get it to use the port I was assigned (free hosting)?

Can I get the web interface to work on any other port than 7000?

Cheers

Paul
