May 3, 2006

Dear Fellow enCore User and enCore Consortium Member:

The new enCore version 5 beta release will soon be out, and it promises to contain many major changes.  These are just a few:

  • Single-screen login (no more popup windows!)
  • HTML chat (no more need to type "say")
  • Extended "webification" so that objects can be operated via point and click more easily
  • A new Teacher class of user with the ability to easily create and manage accounts for a single class or group of students
  • A much improved Mail system that can function as a threaded discussion board
  • Improved support capabilities for language learning enCore sites
    and lots more

The new version 5 of enCore promises exciting improvements in functionality and usability, but these improvements will not be fully accessible without updated Help files.  We need your support to produce accurate, comprehensive, and user-friendly Help files to maximize the potential of this wonderful new version of enCore.

Daniel Jung and the University of Bergen have launched an ambitious project to create single-source documentation for enCore, and the enCore Consortium Board of Directors adopted this project earlier this Spring.  The Consortium is now coming to you, various universities, and foundations seeking support for this enCore v5Documentation Project.

I commend for your reading and close consideration the enclosed proposal describing this project in more detail. Whatever your current or past connection with enCore has been—as teacher, programmer, or administrator; wherever you may be from—Australia, Norway, Canada, Italy, Brazil, Ireland, the United States, England, or Germany (and many other places)—your support is needed now to fund this project for Summer 2006.

We hope to receive contributions from institutions as well as individuals.  No contribution is too small: even $5 helps because it demonstrates to larger potential contributors that enCore has earned the loyalty and backing of its users. For additional details about the project, and how you can support it, please read the included link to the project proposal.

Sincerely Yours,

Lennie Irvin,

President, enCore Consortium

Yes there is. Due to a zany error in programming, it was out of order for a day or two, but it has been back for a week now. It says so in the forum too. You must have tried during that void time, I am sorry. Emote expressions are now a verboseness class, i.e., players may render them formatted via their personal CSS. (Preferences => Chat settings). I (and many, or most, with me) utterly and completely agree that emoting is important. Actually, not exactly (sorry to contradict you here). The rules are rather When "new command style" in ON, AND the user in NOT in a $editor room, then (a) all non-say commands MUST be preceded by a slash (b) UNLESS the already are preceeded by one of the following: : ; - + @ which makes the preceding slash redundant (but not wrong) If an emote command is abridged/replaced by ":", AND is immediately followed by either of "D " [giving :D ] "P " [giving :P ] ")" [giving :)] "(" [giving :(] "((" [giving :((] then this sequence is replaced by a correspondent smiley If an eval command is abridged/replaced by ";", AND is immediately followed by ") " then this sequence is replaced by a winking smiley ;) If the first letter of a unintroduced say command is "8" AND is immediately followed by ") " then this sequence is replaced by a coolness smiley 8) NOTE - When "new command style" in OFF, then all is like before - New command style is set in Preferences CODE Food for the geeks: This happens when a command batch is submitted via HTML Chat input: 68: if (user.html_chat_command_style) 69: if (user.location != $verb_editor && !user.read_stream_mode) 70: if (match(c, "^/.+")) 71: c = c[2..$]; 72: elseif (match(c, "^%(%(:)%)%|%(:(%)%|%(;)%)%|%(:((%)%| %(:D %)%|%(:P %)%|%(8)%)%)", 1)) 73: "we have a smiley..."; 74: c = tostr("\" ", c, " "); 75: elseif (!match(c, "^%(\"%|:%|;%|-%|%+%|@%|/%)")) 76: c = tostr("\"", c); 77: endif 78: endif 79: endif 80: force_input(user, c); Ciao - Daniel From bmcman@optonline.net Mon May 15 21:00:50 2006 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Mon, 15 May 2006 21:00:50 -0500 (CDT) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97E335BAD for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 21:00:50 -0500 (CDT) Received: from localhost (mf2-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.14]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3EEE31025 for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 21:00:50 -0500 (CDT) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([129.110.10.17]) by localhost (mf2.utdallas.edu [10.110.10.14]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 20702-01-81 for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 21:00:48 -0500 (CDT) Received: from mta6.srv.hcvlny.cv.net (mta6.srv.hcvlny.cv.net [167.206.4.201]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 03D14343E for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 21:00:47 -0500 (CDT) Received: from optonline.net (ool-457c7a9e.dyn.optonline.net [69.124.122.158]) by mta6.srv.hcvlny.cv.net (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-4.03 (built Sep 22 2005)) with ESMTP id <0IZC009E35LAPW31@mta6.srv.hcvlny.cv.net> for encore@utdallas.edu; Mon, 15 May 2006 22:00:47 -0400 (EDT) Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 22:00:46 -0400 From: "Barbara F.
