I'm not sure what happened during a restart to cause this but I was finally able to recreate the problem that the students were encountering. The Romantic Circles moo is running enCore 4.0.1. It was an issue with form feedback called from line 55 of object #32:get. The comments on the code for #32:get read "This verb handles and directs all http requests"; and the specific line problem was in the code to "Verify that form data originated from this server. SDC"; I ended up rebooting the backup database from prior to the restart. It seems to work fine now. So, my guess is that I did something different during restart than usual to cause the problem. I've tested it and I'm going to let the students at U Maryland play around with it a bit before feeling totally confident, but it seems okay now. Thank you for your patients. It was a bit of a panic as the students have upcoming projects due soon. Both changes are security measures to prevent malicious code from being executed on player's computers. Unfortunately, I found that those security measures can, in fact, be circumvented by $evil_guy. You find it below. Please share this with the list. Good luck! - Daniel THE ISSUE: When asking to view an object in the Object Editor, (a) the user's pockets are searched (b) the room's contents is searched (c) the room's exits are searched if their names matches the given string. Now, for matching, all these items must be OBJECTS, i.e., all items in the pockets must be objects, all items in the room must be objects, and all exits must be objects. THE PROBLEM: The room's exit list was corrupt. There were strings amoung the objects. strings have no names, thus they cannot be searched (matches) for names. This causes the script to abort. You reported that it worked again, and then, it was back to faulty behaviour. My guess is that people, when reconnected, were simply standing in another room, where it worked, and later, they were back in the corrupt room. The error was there all the time, it was just not run into when it "worked". THE SOLUTION: (a) Quick hack: Created a verb $list_utils:elements_toobj() which takes a list of items and coerces them into being objects for reading. This verb is now called from the match verb. This means that the exit list is still corrupt, but it is read less strictly. You MUST do something about your exits. They might return errors in other contexts. (b) Search for corrupt exit lists: (This is ONE command in the command line.) ;for c in ($object_utils:descendants_suspended(#3)) suspend(0); try for e in (c.exits) if (typeof(e) != OBJ) me:tell((nn = $string_utils:nn(c)), $string_utils:space(35 - length(nn)), " (", typeof(e), ") ", e); endif endfor except error (ANY) me:tell((nn = $string_utils:nn(c)), $string_utils:space(35 - length(nn)), " (", typeof(c.exits), ")" ); endtry endfor gives the following list: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- room type faulty exit ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rob's Mind (#3329) (2) 7000/3297 Rob's Mind (#3329) (2) 7000/3337 Miracle on Ice (#3337) (2) @go #3297 Miracle on Ice (#3337) (2) @go #3329 Spaceworld (#3994) (2) #3498 Monster Construction (#4215) (2) The Home of Thomas Malthus (#5444) (2) WARNING: editing of lists other The Arctic (#5759) (2) to Frankenstein's Home (#5528) William Godwin (#5303) (2) Bedchamber (#6808) (2) ADC's house (#13660) (1) Employment Office (#14660) (1) Copyright Office (#14665) (1) Office (#16031) (2) Nets (#9364) (1) Field (#10565) (1) Field2 (#11198) (1) Multiple Views Room (#12384) (2) #4043 krilon (#18442) (2) #4043 Edenscape (#12511) (2) #4043 Blake Test Room (#19727) (2) #4043 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those rooms have corrupt exit lists. * Where there is (2), there is a STR instead of an OBJ. Some of these strings are even empty. * Where there is (1), there is no list at all, just an object. THE REASON: I guess room owners have used the Xpress Program Editor to hack directly into their room's .exits property. This should NEVER be done. This can have resulted into items being read as strings, and even one-element lists being coerced into objects. Now, the last four rooms show the STR "#4043" as exit. Checking the OBJ #4043, it is, in fact, a room, not an exit: . ruins(#4043) |- Event_Aware_Room(#5665) |-- generic room(#3) |--- enCore Web Object(#126) |---- enCore Web Class(#138) |----- Root Class(#1) Somehow, this room has been written into the room.exits list (as a string). This is ODD. I can't believe users did that manually, and I suspect a verb having done this automatically somehow somewhere. I haven't checked that, but I suspect the event listener stuff being the bad guy here. TO DO: The immediate problem is solved, through $list_utils:elements_toobj. But you must do the following: (1) Find the spot where "#4043" (or other strings refering to an Event Aware Room) is written into the list of a room's exit. (2) Fix that. (3) Fix all rooms that have corrupt exit lists. (list is above) (4) Tell users NEVER to manipulate the exit list manually. I have seen weird things with exits in other MOOs as well, so I might eventually ending up writing a "room fix utility" that could take care of step (3) and just be called with a wizardly command @fix-all_exits or something. But I can't do that now. An=20 excellant bit of work there!

I ran=20 into that when working on the long list of drinks for Lou at=20 TTUMoo.

Caution must be used anytime a user edits a property in = Xpress. =20 Unfortunately Xpress can't be used to check what is actually input = because it=20 displays correctly!

I=20 always check the property using the text side or another editor = like =20 TKMOO.

Is=20 there a fix available for this behaviour?

Ciao

The upgrade includes * patching the lambdamoo server (optional but recommended) * converting the enCore database (optional) * installing (or using) PHP4/PEAR and mysql (optional but recommended) * installing graphics * patching something like 30.000 lines of code. All web apps have changed completely. A few argument structures have changed, and calls rewritten. Depending on how tweaked your 4.0.1 is, you will have to adjust existing (custom) code. With this release a number of projects will be jump-started in action, specifically a usability study and documentation project. These parts of the development process are vital to insure the sustainability of the version as it moves into the hands of users around the world. We have excellent sources to conduct these projects, but they need funding resources. As Cynthia and I know from having worked on enCore alone, for the most part, for over 10 years, it is vital that the enCore Consortium pull in willing partners in the development phases to come. Help documentation is crucial to the success of enCore as a learning environment, and we feel this particular solution to the help documentation is pretty amazing. You will read about it in more detail in Lennie Irvin=B9s proposal, but it is, programmatically speaking, an extremely ingenious solution that needs more programming to complete, and finally, content to integrate into its system. We are excited that the new version is going into its beta stage of testing, and we hope others will help support this project any way they can. Please join us in congratulating the team led by Daniel Jung at University of Bergen, Norway, for his development work...and in congratulating the enCore Consortium for keeping our dreams alive. We think they are also the dreams of all enCore MOO administrators, teachers, and students. They are working tirelessly to improve the system and to make this a truly Open Source project for what has proven to be one of the most stable, robust e-learning systems that continues to put commercially available products to shame. Please read Lennie=B9s proposal and step up and offer your support of this important work. Best wishes, Jan Rune Holmevik and Cynthia Haynes Jan Rune Holmevik, Dr. Art. I can use the Add Multimedia content property to insert a sound file for a regular room so that the sound starts when you enter the room, but I can't seem to make it work for an HTML room. Any help would be appreciated. I'm seeing if I can create a presentation where each room is like a powerpoint slide and I can create the audio to go with each room/slide. As you navigate to each room (which displays a web page description), the sound commentary starts up automatically for each room/slide. There may be more elegant ways of doing this, but this method works for me. The $html_slide_projector in v5 has that feature (custom sound connected to a web page, either self-made page or external page). Else, Barbara's solution is perfectly good. - Daniel
