Wow, thanks for all of the = help!

OK, so the network is not under my control and = is pretty much the other side of the world from me. However I can recommend = things for them to try as it’s vitally important they can login before = Monday morning…

I’ll give you all of the information I = know.

The computer in the office is Windows XP pro = with SP2 and the latest version of Java. Pop-ups etc are not an issue. It CAN = connect through both the Xpress login screen AND via a simple telnet connection. = This PC works as a proxy for the computers in the = lab.

The computers in the lab are all running = Windows XP pro with SP2 and the latest version of Java. It CANNOT connect through = Xpress and receives the Java.Lang error, the exact error message I am unsure of = due to appalling quality of phone lines! When they try to connect via telnet = they receive a ‘could not open connection to the host, on port 7777 = (and 7000 and 8000): connect failed.’

Trond, I believe you’re onto something = for sure with the persistent telnet connection. Perhaps the proxy will not allow = ports other than 80 to be accessed, but then how would they be able to see the = login screen on port 7000. Yes, to stop thinking out loud I’m thinking persistence. Would that make sense to = everyone?

Daniel I agree that I can pretty much discount = a firewall problem as the proxy pc can = connect.

I suppose the best plan of attack would be for = them to check all of the parameters on their proxy software and perhaps = contact the vendors of them to see if they know what the problem could be. = I’ll definitely push for a different network configuration as the proxy setup = seems to be causing the problems.

Kind Regards,

With our official 501(c)(3) status, we can receive tax-exempt donations from individuals or organizations. It is a grueling form to fill out, and we are all grateful to Barbara for taking on this task. *Support Sent* The Consortium has also sent $5,000 to University of Bergen to support the work of Daniel Jung and the Department of Humanistic Informatics at UiB on enCore Program development. *New Project--Support Requested* In January, Daniel Jung made a request of the enCore Consortium to support the work of Trond Pettersen in developing a single-source documentation solution for the new enCore v5. The Consortium Board of Directors in a February meeting agreed to support this project by both donating $3,000 for Trond's work and by seeking other sponsors for the programming work and the help text composing. Soon I will be making an appeal to all of you to support this work, but in the meantime, you can do a couple of painless (and free) things to support the Consortium as it seeks grants and sponsors: a) If your enCore site is not listed in the Portfolio of enCore MOOs , please contact Cynthia Haynes to get in the portfolio (cynthia.haynes@gmail.com) b) If you aren't already a member (or "associate") of the enCore Consortium, please consider joining: http://www.encore-consortium.org/Membership.htm . Thanks for you help! *enCore v5 News* Daniel will have to be the one to share definite information about the new v5 and its release. All I know is that he has been working very hard on it, and I think it is getting close. We hope to do usability testing on the beta version at Texas Tech University this May, and work has begun on the Documentation Project. A Sept. 2005 version of the beta v5 is available for you to explore if you like at http://lingo.uib.no:9002/ (contact me for an account). I know as the new version approaches we will be getting good information out to you about updating to it. More information about v5 (and what sorts of jobs need to be done!) can be found at http://lingo.uib.no/v5/ *Other tid-bits related to Grants *Jeffrey Schneider at Vassar College has been awarded a NITLE college grant to conduct a week-long workshop this summer on using enCore for foreign language instruction. Jeff Webb and Robert Rozema at Western Michigan University (Secondary Worlds enCore site) have received a substantial grant from their institution to expand his work in enCore to create immersive, interactive, and engaging virtual reality environments that support reading and writing in a variety of disciplines. Both of these grants are good signs of enCore's continued viability, which should be enhanced even more with the release of v5. I am interested in building from these two grants to put together a larger National Endowment for the Humanitities Grant (due in October), so let me know if you are interested in this effort. If you need any assistance putting together a grant for a special enCore-related project you are considering, please contact me for assistance. I hope all of you are well. enCore v5 News
Daniel will have to be the one to share definite information about the new v5 and its release.

More information about v5 (and what sorts of jobs need to be done!) can be found at http://lingo.uib.no/v5/

Other tid-bits related to Grants
Jeffrey Schneider at Vassar College has been awarded a NITLE college grant to conduct a week-long workshop this summer on using enCore for foreign language instruction.

Jeff Webb and Robert Rozema at Western Michigan University (Secondary Worlds enCore site) have received a substantial grant from their institution to expand his work in enCore to
create immersive, interactive, and engaging virtual reality environments that support reading and writing in a variety of disciplines.

I'd love to hear news of what is happening at your site these days (feel free to share with the list).

Yours,

Lennie

We will both be in the English Department there, teaching in the new Rhetoric, Communication, and Information Design PhD program (RCID), which is under th= e new leadership of Victor Vitanza. Since most tasks are very simple and won't even go near that quota, this is usually not a problem and is a good way to prevent programming mistakes such as infinite loops caused by a bad predicate. If you have a legitimate task that is running out of ticks, you must manage its tick-usage by suspending it from time to time. After being suspended the task will resume with its full tick count. In my opinion, the simplest way to do this (and you'll see this in a lot of MOO code) is to call the following helper function before the blocks of code you know will eventually run out of ticks: $command_utils:suspend_if_needed(0); Simply put, this function first checks if you are nearly out of ticks, and if so will symbolically suspend the task for "0" seconds. This error will usually rise when you are doing repetitive manipulations like scanning through a list of objects. If the list is very small you will have no problem executing the task, but as the list gets larger it will eventually run out of ticks. To prevent this, insert the "suspend_if_needed" line somewhere inside your loop, ex: while (...) $command_utils:suspend_if_needed(0); ' do some interesting stuff endwhile You can take a look at the code listing of "$room:announce" to see an actual usage of this command. Hope this helps! - Alexandre Borgia Robert Rozema wrote: >Okay, I need a little programming advice here. > >I keep getting a "task ran out of ticks" error when I try to execute a >simple verb I've written. If you take a look at its code (look_self), you will notice that there are a lot of for-clauses which are not suspended. They should have been; since they are not, the whole stack of verbs runs out of quota if the previous verbs in the stack haven't been suspended. Note that line 36 in that verb is the first statement in a for clause. > ... called from #3:enterfunc (this == #851), line 4 > ... called from #99:enterfunc (this == #851), line 2 > ... called from built-in function move() > ... called from #1:moveto (this == #1163), line 2 > ... called from #6:moveto (this == #1163), line 6 > ... called from #1710:shake, line 7 Suggestion 1: If you want to make the compiling of the tribes/classes dependent on connection, you could write something like this: 1: all_players = all_africans = all_british = {}; 2: for c in (connected_players()) 3: if ($object_utils:isa(c, #1721)) 4: all_players = {@all_players, c}; 5: elseif ($object_utils:isa(c, #1722)) 6: all_africans = {@all_africans, c}; 7: elseif ($object_utils:isa(c, #1723)) 8: all_british = {@all_british, c}; 9: endif 10: endfor Unless, of course, #1721 is the parent object for #1722 and #1723, in which case you should write 1: all_players = all_africans = all_british = {}; 2: for c in (connected_players()) 3: if ($object_utils:isa(c, #1721)) 4: all_players = {@all_players, c}; 5: if ($object_utils:isa(c, #1722)) 6: all_africans = {@all_africans, c}; 7: elseif ($object_utils:isa(c, #1723)) 8: all_british = {@all_british, c}; 9: endif 10: endif 11: endfor As you see, it is the other way round; we are not compileing and then removing from the compilation, but we are only adding. Suggestion 2: At a closer look, you ask the player if something should be done to a compiled class of players. If the answer is no, this compiled class is not used. This is not efficient. It would make sense to only compile the class IF it is going to be used. So instead of all_africans = $object_utils:descendants(#1722); if ($command_utils:yes_or_no("Move all Africans?")) "do something to all_africans"; endif you should consider writing if ($command_utils:yes_or_no("Move all Africans?")) all_africans = $object_utils:descendants(#1722); "perhaps refine/restrict this class"; "do something to all_africans"; endif HTH - Daniel From joseph.p.haughey@wmich.edu Thu Mar 23 07:33:36 2006 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Thu, 23 Mar 2006 07:33:36 -0600 (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 087655BCC for ; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 07:33:35 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (mf2-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.14]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id BED5FA47E for ; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 07:33:35 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([129.110.10.17]) by localhost (mf2.utdallas.edu [10.110.10.14]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 19611-01-5 for ; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 07:33:34 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx.wmich.edu (mx-tmp.wmich.edu [141.218.1.43]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1AF453384 for ; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 07:33:33 -0600 (CST) Received: from salk.admin.private (avs02.service.private [172.30.31.162]) by mta02.service.private (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.13 (built Jun 8 2005)) with SMTP id <0IWL00I081KN99A0@mta02.service.private> for encore@utdallas.edu; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:33:33 -0500 (EST) Received: from mta-avs03.service.private ([172.30.30.163]) by salk.admin.private with SMTP id M2006032308333320481 for ; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:33:33 -0500 Received: from wmich.edu (ms01.trusted.private [172.30.20.70]) by mta03.service.private (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.13 (built Jun 8 2005)) with ESMTP id <0IWL005TF1NXDZ00@mta03.service.private> for encore@utdallas.edu; Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:33:33 -0500 (EST) Received: from [172.30.20.130] (Forwarded-For: [141.218.128.218]) by ms01.trusted.private (mshttpd); Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:33:33 -0500 Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2006 08:33:33 -0500 From: Joseph P Haughey Subject: [encore] making players appear invisible To: encore@utdallas.edu Message-id: <7cacd18920c5a.44225d5d@wmich.edu> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Sun Java(tm) System Messenger Express 6.1 HotFix 0.13 (built Jun 8 2005) Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-language: en Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-disposition: inline X-Accept-Language: en Priority: normal X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at utdallas.edu X-archive-position: 1621 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: joseph.p.haughey@wmich.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: joseph.p.haughey@wmich.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore I am working with a group of undergrad students in my Shakespeare class on creating a virtual world based on The Tempest, and we would like to find a way to make some of the players in role-playing game have the ability to become invisible to other players, so that they can wander from room to room undetected and be able to "do" things to other characters. As with any kind of program that changes the default behaviour of the system, like displaying a description of objects in a room for example, = it helps to be able to find out how the default effect is achieved. Once = you know that you can augment or change the default behaviour by adding a = verb to the minimum number of objects. In this case the best approach would probably be to change the verb in = the rooms that displays contents.=20 On my version 4 EnCore MOO that verb is the :tell_contents verb on the $Generic Room. If you modified this verb to hide any player with a enabled invisible property then players in the room would not see them by doing a look. = If the player knew the invisible user was present they could still be able = to look at them directly so you would also have to change the look_self = verb on the faerie player as well. That could be something as simple as referencing a different description when the invisible property was set. Something like "you see a slight movement out of the corner of your eye" type thing. I hope that helps. I made the object and it's working nicely. Just have to drop the HTML code into the description and it fires open the html when you click on it. What I really want to be able to do though is to put a URL into the description and have the object display the website when I click on it. I've started playing around with a web projector, using various verbs on it but I've still not quite got it right. Any ideas?
