E.g., I get the string "INT" from somewhere, and I want to use that string in order to work on something else as INT. Now since I found no builtin `totype()' or anything else usefull (I may be blind though), I made a small verb to return the value. I only consider user-visible types. ------------------------------------- $string_utils:type_from_string() ------------------------------------- {string} = args; if (string == "INT") return INT; elseif (string == "OBJ") return OBJ; elseif (string == "STR") return STR; elseif (string == "ERR" || index(string, "E_")) return ERR; elseif (string == "LIST") return LIST; elseif (string == "FLOAT") return FLOAT; else return -1; endif ------------------------------------- I'm not really sure what to do in the ELSE statement. I want to return something when the argument is not in the range of known (or: permitted) types. Obviously, I don't want to return E_INVARG because of the test in line 8. I had "return #-1 ($nothing)" there first, but it broke tests like ;$string_utils:is_integer($string_utils:type_from_string()) and testing ;$string_utils:is_integer(tostr($string_utils:type_from_string())) was too bone head for my taste. So I decided to return -1 and rather test it with ;$string_utils:type_from_string() >= 0 That works. But is it pretty? And is it consistent with existing code and convention? I'm not really sure. I see that the server panics (or writes to errlog()) in a few cases where unknown values are encountered, but I cannot see how I could use that. On the other hand, slot 4 in function_info() returns -1 for "any type" and (as far as I can see) -2 for "I don't bother telling you". I definitely don't want to mix "any type" and "unknown type". Isn't there a convention for returning "no known type"? Some !TYPE_ANY or anything? I'm just a little confused. - Daniel From jung@uib.no Mon Nov 7 05:25:54 2005 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Mon, 07 Nov 2005 05:25:54 -0600 (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 376115BDD for ; Mon, 7 Nov 2005 05:25:54 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id DCCB014F2 for ; Mon, 7 Nov 2005 05:25:53 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([129.110.10.17]) by localhost (mf1 [10.110.10.13]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 17776-01-63 for ; Mon, 7 Nov 2005 05:25:49 -0600 (CST) Received: from noralf.uib.no (noralf.uib.no [129.177.30.12]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 73F892CB1 for ; Mon, 7 Nov 2005 05:25:49 -0600 (CST) Received: from alfalfa.uib.no (webmail.uib.no) [129.177.13.21] by noralf.uib.no with esmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1EZ58E-00067O-UE; Mon, 07 Nov 2005 12:25:47 +0100 Received: from httpd by webmail.uib.no with local (Exim 4.12) id 1EZ58E-0000IT-00; Mon, 07 Nov 2005 12:25:46 +0100 Received: from goethe.germ.uib.no [129.177.213.71] as user fafdj@localhost by webmail.uib.no with HTTP; Mon, 07 Nov 2005 12:25:45 +0100 Message-ID: <1131362745.436f39b9303e7@webmail.uib.no> Date: Mon, 07 Nov 2005 12:25:45 +0100 From: Daniel Jung To: Development@encore-consortium.org, Development@encore-consortium.org, development@encore-consortium.org Cc: encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] Mobile MOO: study of feasibility MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.1-cvs X-checked-clean: by exiscan on noralf X-Scanner: df2758a2178955d227213b8116c237a0 http://tjinfo.uib.no/virus.html X-UiB-SpamFlag: NO UIB: -9.4 hits, 8.0 required X-UiB-SpamReport: spamassassin found; -9.0 Message received from UIB -0.4 Did not pass through any untrusted hosts X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at utdallas.edu X-archive-position: 1525 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: jung@uib.no Precedence: bulk Reply-to: jung@uib.no List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Hi there I am involved in a project which has incorporated synchronous sound facility to enCore. Now, yet another project connected to that project has some fundings left to make "a study of feasibility for the extension of the MOO with mobile technologies." In other works: Could we, and how, break down enCore to functions which are accessible by mobile technology? I have been asked if I could conduct this study, but I can't. Time doesn't allow it, and there might be other people out there knowing more about mobile technology than I do. Ideally, it would be a verbose output of the actions run on one task. ------------------- task_id: 4732647196 ------------------- #123:go => used 24 ticks until line 14 called #123:continue => used 33 ticks until line 7 called #255:make => used 144 ticks until line 22 forked #255:bg_check => see task_id: 8902850280 called #83:check => used 200 ticks until line 65 ------------------- Has anybody done such a kind of measurement yet? And would share the code? Thanks - Daniel
