This is a _real_ challenge and a _lot_ of work. -------------- $survey object -------------- * It should serve both polls and self-study exercises. * It should be all-GUI. It should make use of the new $encore_web_utils facilities in v5. * It should lead the user through the creating of the survey step-by-step, be flexible along the way, and not be confined to a predefined set or number of questions. * It should include radio buttons, drop down select choices, text fields and text areas for free answers. * Results should be stored on the object. They should be readable for the owner and the co-owners, but not publicly (or: optionally so). * Results should always be (wizardly) trackable back to the participant to allow "one-answer-per-user"; the track should optionally be anonymous/invisible for non-wizards. * Results should optionally be open for re-editig (by the user) until a final submit "seals" it. * The result should be displayed in a sortable table. * The result table should be generated with arguments, i.e., fields should be optionally hidden. * It should maybe be pollable from outside the MOO (non-MOO-scripts could have access to in-MOO-data). Example: Upon creation, the user is lead through a series of questions: ****************************************** What do you want to add to the survey? Tick the radio button: O - a radio button choice Ø - a drop down select choice O - a single line text field O - a multiline text area [submit] OK. Drop down it is. Please enter the question: _______________________________ | | | | |_______________________________| [submit] OK. Now enter the predefined drop down choices One choice per line. You may enter any number of choices. _______________________________ | | | | |_______________________________| [submit] OK. We have added this drop down select to the survey. What do you want to add to the survey? Tick the radio button: O - a radio button choice O - a drop down select choice O - a single line text field O - a multiline text area Ø - nothing. I'm done [submit] OK. The survey is now bla bla bla. ****************************************** ... and so on. Are my port and web port supposed > to be set to the same number? No, never. It is a mistake if they are. The (telnet) port number is typically something above 1024, often 7777 or a variation of that, like 6666 or 5555 etc. The web port number often is 7000 or a variation of that too (6000 or 5000 etc.) Both web and telnet port need to be set in three places: in the moo database AND in the startup file AND in the server the moo is running on (well, not `set', but verified if traffic is allowed. There might be firewalls installed on the server, prohibiting traffic on a given range of ports. Talk to your server guy and ask if you can use e.g., 7777 and 7000. 7000 works, so the port range should be OK. My guess: Maybe they switched off the telnet protocol alltogether? I tried to telnet to webapp01.it.wmich.edu 7777 and was refused, but also to port 22 and 23 where I was refused as well. Ask them: "How come I can't telnet or even ssh to the server any more? I need to have at least port 7777 open for telnet access.". > I also noticed that the login page will come up only when > the domain name is set to an IP address, rather than the > actual name (which is webapp01.it.wmich.edu). http://webapp01.it.wmich.edu:7000/ displays the Secondary Worlds Login page just fine here on my computer. And I see you must have set it back to "webapp01.it.wmich.edu" in the MOO as well. BTW I'm getting a "$enCore_web_utils:move_via_web" error when clicking on the look button while the applet is waiting, meaning: when still in Limbo... where I am stuck because I never make the transition to connected_players(). That verb should be rewritten as well. /Note to self. The telnet port (currently set to 7777) and the web port (currently = set to 7000) are not supposed to be the same. The web port is listening; = that's why the web side works. 2. The telnet port is not accepting connections at all. This explains why = the java side and the mootcan are not working. When I did manage to = connect via telnet, I was connecting via port 7000--the web port. This = explains why we could not do both at once. 3. Hello everyone.  I am an Instructional Specialist/faculty member of Eastfield College building a MOO to be used for developmental studies students.  I was trying to configure our MOO after the download.  Everything started out fine...

I went in thru Telnet.  Did the @configure command.  I followed the Steps in High Wired, which said to do items 1,2,3 8,18...no problem.  I also did #5 and changed the name to Harvest MOO.  I quit, then logged in and looked around.  Clicked the wizard button and looked at the options there.  I wanted to edit the Welcome page, but I don't know how to program in HTML #@%*&!!  The last thing I did was go to options, select names, and changed my name from wizard to Christine, hit quit and went to do an Internet search on how to program in HTML!!

When I came back, I can no longer get on.  I put in my name and password and up comes a screen with Harvest MOO on the top blue bar, but nothing else and a third window that says 'about blank' at the top.  It's not that it isn't letting me on...I'm not getting an invalid user name...It's just got nowhere to go.

I got back on through telnet and went through the configure command again...no help. I still get blank pages when I try to log on.

Here is what the config said:

4.  Network                                      active

5. Moo name                                    Harvest MOO

6. Port                                             7777

7. Web Port                                     7000

8. Domain name                              efcbookex.dcccd.edu

9. Mail server                                  127.0.0.1

15. Xpress Client                              running

16.  Http                                          on

18. Base URL                                   http://efcbookex.dcccd.edu/encore/

I understand (now) that my account was an arch wizard account…I thought I was one of several on this MOO…and changing the name was not the right move, but I am unsure how to correct this. Today I cannot get back into Telnet.

Any help appreciated.

I have been where you are before. It sounds like your moo restored an old version of your database upon restart. You will probably need two things: 1) find the latest backup copy of your database you have 2) double-check that you mooserver restart sequence restores the correct version of the database I think others can explain this better than I, but the moo has three versions of the database: yourmoo.db yourmoo.new yourmoo.old I may be wrong about what is going on, but I think your moo restarted from the old version of the moo. I know I had to have a restart script coded for instances when the server (a Windows server) where my moo lived was rebooted (hence restarting the moo). The moo undergoes a sequence of backing up when it shuts down. I think one of the versions (.db perhaps) is the current database in real time; another dabase (.new maybe) is a periodically backed up version (I think it does it fairly regularly as in on the hour. It is the moo checkpoing you might have noticed); and the last database (.old) is the version from the last time you shutdown the mooserver. When the mooserver shutsdown, I think all three of the database files are the same, but over time they diverge. If you haven't restarted your moo for a long time, the yourmoo.old version could be quite out of date. It sounds like you have restored your moo from the yourmoo.old version to me. You would want to find the yourmoo.db or .new version to restore from. How to do that exactly, I am not sure. I think the whole issue of backing up and restoring data is one we need to make easier and more user-friendly. Good luck and I hope this helps a little. Did the server, on which your moo is running, crash? Maybe they have a more recent backup from which they could restore the files. If the MOO had not been taken down since that date (2003)the .db file = itself would be very old! It's the .new file you would want to restore. I'm sorry to hear that you may have lost all that work :( Ciao KJ -----Original Message----- From: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu [mailto:encore-bounce@utdallas.edu] On Behalf Of Robert Rozema Sent: September 30, 2005 6:19 PM To: Lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu; encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] MOOicide? So, after a lot of trying, my enCore MOO is still running an older = database that is missing a ton of stuff. It looks like it has reverted to a = 3.3.3 version too, and it had been upgraded to a 4.0. I have tried everything possible to recover the current database, but it seems like it is lost for good, along with hundreds of work hours. =20 No access to the actual server has made it difficult to sort through = what happened to the server and why the MOO reverted to its 2003 state.
