Safari doesn't either. Bad enough, but that's not the question. Netscape and the Gecko family run the applet like they should, but: You cannot compose characters in the applet. Meaning key combinations that lead to é, à, ñ, ü, etc. It is possible to copy-and-paste into the applet, and the characters are rendered and sent (and, server side, processed) correctly. It is possible to switch the keyboard to a "foreign" one and get accented characters by pushing "built-in" single stroke accented characters. Combining is a problem though. In Firefox, the browser's "search-while-you-type" feature takes over when an accent is chosen (say ´), and when hitting the following vowel (say e), the browser alerts you "Link é not found". I believe this to be a browser bug. Still, it tells us that accents are breaking (blurring) the input flow somehow. Is there any way to escape that break signal? The other Gecko browsers (w/o the "search-while-you-type" feature) just ignore the set (the two keys). I haven't figured out yet how to fix that. I have tried in vain to search MAC and JAVA forums for messages about that special behaviour, but couldn't find any usefull text. Since I cannot tell my users to switch to IExplorer or Safari either (see first paragraph), I'm kind of stuck here... Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. We have a rogue user who keeps moving > other peoples stuff about but we are having difficulty > finding out who it is. Sounds like fun. :) Answer: There is NO recollection of who moved what in the MOO. You can, however, hack a few verbs to track moving. Example: 1. Build a property: -------------------- @prop $root_class.moveto_data {} 2. Insert this into the verb $root_class:moveto ----------------------------------------------- new_data = {time(), player}; this.moveto_data = (!(is_clear_property(md = this.moveto_data))) ? {@md, new_data} | new_data; 3. Create a new verb on yourself -------------------------------- @verb me:@trackmove any none none rd @program me:@trackmove object = argstr; this:tell(); if (!length(md = toobj(argstr).moveto_data)) this:tell("no moving data for ", object); else for m in (md) this:tell(ctime(m[1]), ": ", m[2], " (", m[2].name, ") moved ", object); endfor endif this:tell(); 4. Track the moving about ------------------------- Whenever there is an object moved about and you want to know who moved it, type the following command (e.g., the object is #1020): @trackmove #1020 This is code off the sleeve. No warranty! Hope it works. CAVEAT: Be carefull with $root_class:moveto()! Once you have tracked down the rogue, you should consider reverting $root_class:moveto to its original version. - Daniel From jung@uib.no Mon Oct 25 09:04:58 2004 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:04:58 -0500 (CDT) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 787735BAD for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:04:58 -0500 (CDT) Received: from localhost (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29846212A for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:04:58 -0500 (CDT) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([129.110.10.17]) by localhost (mf1 [10.110.10.13]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 24044-01-26 for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:04:56 -0500 (CDT) Received: from noralf.uib.no (noralf.uib.no [129.177.30.12]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3DA0039F3 for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:04:56 -0500 (CDT) Received: from alfred.uib.no (smtp.uib.no) [129.177.30.120] by noralf.uib.no with esmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1CM5Sv-0006gh-Gd; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 16:04:55 +0200 Received: from tunnel-45-30.vpn.uib.no [129.177.45.30] by smtp.uib.no for encore@utdallas.edu with esmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1CM5Su-0003Rj-Tv; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 16:04:53 +0200 Message-ID: <417D0800.7060602@uib.no> Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 16:04:48 +0200 From: Daniel Jung User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.8 (Windows/20040913) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] Re: Who moved that object References: <1098707166.417cf0dea7c16@webmail.uib.no> In-Reply-To: <1098707166.417cf0dea7c16@webmail.uib.no> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-checked-clean: by exiscan on noralf X-Scanner: c3f880256e5d09f51e18c9bbb7222e21 http://tjinfo.uib.no/virus.html X-UiB-SpamFlag: NO UIB: 0.0 hits, 11.0 required X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030616-p9 at utdallas.edu X-archive-position: 1232 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: jung@uib.no Precedence: bulk Reply-to: jung@uib.no List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Hi again Came to think about one thing: Daniel Jung wrote: > 2. Malicious programmers have always been an annoyance in MOOs. They cannot do much damage (like loss of data), but can perform very annoying tricks like resource consumption, mass-mailing, spamming the conversation window ... and moving things around, unfortunately. The philosophy behind MOO programming has always been one of share & trust. Small communities are usually easy to monitor, and leaving such freedom to developers is in my opinion a good thing since it lets the MOO evolve in many creative way. Some MOOs enforce stronger programming politics than other, but as general rules, every programmer should be known by Wizards who keep an eye on their work from time to time. For instance, it is interesting to periodically check the list of @forked tasks and make sure no unjustified tasks are running in background. Also, when increasing quota, it might be worth surveying what the programmer has previously created. Furthermore, Lambda MOO (hence enCore) has a "builder" player-class that has rights to create objects but cannot do any programming work. This is a very interesting class to use if you want to give the opportunity for your players to create object instances without worrying about potential damages. In my MOO, players are created with this class and a small amount of quota is given to everyone, so I only have to worry about actual requests of players who really wish to develop. That being said, Daniel's tool should be quite efficient at finding your troublemaker:) I'd also like to point out that there are mechanism to prevent unwanted moving of objects, mainly @locking the objects in a particular room or for a particular person, or using the $housekeeper (try "help $housekeeper"). The later is particularly useful if you want to create moods using room objects and make sure that they somewhat remain at the same place. Hypothetically, you can add objects to the $housekeeper using the following command: ;$housekeeper:add_cleanup(); .. and remove them this way: ;$housekeeper:remove_cleanup(); Where is the ID (i.e. #123) of a MOO object. You also have to activate the housekeeper like this: ;$housekeeper:continuous(); Objects managed by the housekeeper are cleaned up periodically, that is, they are returned at the location they were when you originally added them. This is done only if the object is no longer "used", that is, that there are nobody at the current object location and also it is not being carried by an active player. It is an interesting tool because you can leave objects laying around that can be used and carried by players, being certain that they will eventually come back to the original scene. About the bugs encountered ... it seems that $housekeeper:continuous will never enter the main loop if there is only one object to clean because of a bogus index declaration - or it will never clean the last object added. Also, I don't see how the "litterbug" functionality can work as expected, though it is not one of the functionalities I described above. On a side note, you can use the housekeeper to personalize the messages displayed when people are taken back to their room on disconnect. They are $housekeeper.drop_off_msg and $housekeeper.take_away_msg :) Sincerely, - Alexandre Borgia -----Original Message----- From: Peter Whitehouse [mailto:pwhitehouse@optusnet.com.au] Sent: 25 octobre 2004 21:11 To: alexborgia@hotmail.com Subject: Re: [encore] Re: Who moved that object > $housekeeper (try"help $housekeeper"). You can "open MOOtcan" from the main login screen and check the html source to see the port used by the MOO. The key looks like this: Open a command prompt and type: telnet
... in your case telnet webapp01.it.wmich.edu 7777 If the connection can't be made, it is most probable that a firewall/proxy server is blocking that port. 2) Open the java console and read the error log. It will tell you what went wrong with the applet. Possible reasons are that the applet is not supported by the java plug-in version or that security policies restrict outgoing connections to be made from applets. Since the housekeeper is no part of the official enCore documentation and has no user interface associated with it I'm hesitant to call this a bug, though it would obviously be nice to get it working correctly on future releases. For those interested in using the $housekeeper you may change the following line in $housekeeper:continuous : 14: while (index < length(this.clean)) For this one: while (index <= length(this.clean)) The functionalities I described in my last post should now work as expected. Notice that the Housekeeper works as a real-life labourer and does not clean the MOO "instantly". He will though try to make his run within less than an hour, moving objects and taking naps between :) - Alexandre Borgia From milokp@gmail.com Wed Oct 27 19:15:26 2004 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Wed, 27 Oct 2004 19:15:26 -0500 (CDT) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 049685BB0 for ; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 19:15:26 -0500 (CDT) Received: from localhost (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id D06D11744 for ; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 19:15:25 -0500 (CDT) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([129.110.10.17]) by localhost (mf1 [10.110.10.13]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 02973-01-71 for ; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 19:15:24 -0500 (CDT) Received: from wproxy.gmail.com (wproxy.gmail.com [64.233.184.194]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64CFB39F3 for ; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 19:15:24 -0500 (CDT) Received: by wproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id 69so912530wri for ; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 17:15:24 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:references; b=ew6YUimQ8JsnE7wsH7wXu0xUC2uxqH+rnmWHe0Qt4Ov6tTzBRG7lFHpwpydC1LSPOuZ7NnMlZ6bPobHHMz7XWyRZUdrcFGmctmo5TnqiU/kyHmCfqPyXxcNtR4oM1KoAv3wAMHozCrMEC9TcEepkX1sshW9k8hZVIzZlqynR8pU= Received: by 10.38.151.24 with SMTP id y24mr1078245rnd; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 17:15:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.38.72.25 with HTTP; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 17:15:23 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 20:15:23 -0400 From: Milo Pschigoda To: encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] Re: Access Issue In-Reply-To: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit References: X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030616-p9 at utdallas.edu X-archive-position: 1241 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: milokp@gmail.com Precedence: bulk Reply-to: milokp@gmail.com List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore On Wed, 27 Oct 2004 16:27:25 -0400, Robert Rozema wrote: > Milo, > > Odd. A thought just struck me, is the MOO being hosted on the same server as the Webserver? I seem to recall the documentation mentioning that they must be on the same machine and thinking to myself, "That's wieard, I wonder why." MOOtcan tells me that the MOO is running on webapp01.it.wmich.edu, following address... drat, yes they are running on the same system. But on a good note, I did connect through Xpress [currently logged in as Shakespeare Guest] by entering the address http://webapp01.it.wmich.edu:7000/Xpress_client/vertical_layout/ directly into the address bar. I got the address from the javascript in the "login-window" frame from http://www.wmich.edu/teachenglish/encore . So, your MOO works, at least on campus and I have to assume off, but there is a problem with the ... login page javascript? That doesn't seem right. Unfortunatly now I am out of ideas.
