When I create a new $webpage room (and when I @chparent a generic room to a $webpage room), it doesn't appear a real room is being created. An exit is created from the original room, and you can click to "enter" it; however, your real location has not changed. Nor does an exit back to the original room appear in the new webpage room (although, in your inventory it shows two exits were created along with the $webpage room creation). While appearing to stand within the new $webpage room, if you hit LOOK, the viewing window screen will change and you will see the original room--just like the $webpage room were an object within the original room. In fact, if you check your location when you appear to be in this new $webpage room, it shows that your real location is in the original room. Popupblockers seem to be ubiquitous these days. Case in point: I just downloaded an update to Shockwave, and it prompted me to install a new Yahoo menubar with popup blocker included for my browser (I declined). I am worried in two settings: 1) Lab/Computer classroom setting: Last semester, we were having a significant number of computers that emerged with popup blockers that they somehow had downloaded from browsing the web. Our technicians did not install the popup blockers, and I believe our security settings were set so that students couldn't install programs themselves. How the popup blockers were installed I don't know, but there they were, effectively making the workstation unusable for enCore until the popblocker was uninstalled (which was difficult). Perhaps this kind of popblocker is a different kind? 2) Home setting A student has installed a popup blocker, so when they go to access enCore, they can't get in. It seems to me that we need some good clear instructions about what to do in the case of a popup blocker restricting access to enCore. I was not using popup blockers until recently since Firefox (latest Mozilla-based browser which is awesome by the way!) and Internet = Explorer 6 with Windows SP2 installed both have a built-in popup blocking = mechanism. From what I've experienced so far they are both very well designed as to allow "good" popups and block the "bad" or unwanted ones. What's the difference between a "good" and a "bad" popup? A good popup is brought up on the screen directly from an user action. For instance, an hyperlink opening a new window with either a new target = name or a javascript action is usually allowed. A bad one is everything else = that is opened silently in the background and over which the user has no = decision to make. As previously stated, "good" popups are allowed without further ado by most popup blockers. Sadly, enCore 3.x does not use this type of = popups, at least not during login time (I could not verify with 4.x). What can be done then? Most popup blockers have a list of safe sites where popups are always allowed. It is usually very easy to = manage through menu actions like "always allow popups for this site" or = "temporary allow popups for this site". I think the best prevention that can be = done is to make the user aware of it, and try to provide step-by-step instructions on how to do it for major popup blocking software. There = are probably tons of resources on the web on that matter. As for the question about Windows XP SP2, I did not have problem browsing an enCore MOO with it installed. The new firewall is application-based. Every time an unknown application tries to reach the = net it learns from the user using a dialog box whether it should be allowed = or not. I may have had to click "accept" at some point for the Java = engine, I don't remember. DigiCULT: Technology Challenges for Digital Culture is a well-funded EU project to study how a number of current and emerging technologies can be employed "to optimise the development, access to, and preservation of Europe's rich cultural and scientific heritage," and it is very interesting that this high-powered group has included MOOs and MUDs among "current and future trends in several technology domains that have been identified as key areas" for their mission. The problem many times was located in a conflict in Microsoft and Sun system's "Java". Microsoft's "version" of java no longer works and so the students need to go to www.java.com and download Sun system's true java, it's automatically scanned by the site for the appropriate java for their operating system and then the student installs it. The student then needs to reboot their machine and that fixes the problem. The two companies no longer play well together so we now need to get the appropriate shovel and pail if we want to play in the sandbox. *s* You may want to suggest that option and see if it works for your students -- btw, we too are still running enCORE version 3.3.3 best wishes, Jean Jean Kreis, M.Ed., M.A. EDUCAUSE NLII 2004 Fellow University of Arizona Program Coordinator, Sr. Web-Based Instructional Tools Learning Technologies Center, Rm. 337 PO Box 21007 1077 N.
