I was going to take my Technical Writing class into AlaMOO today as guests to do a chat on a new project we were starting, but I experienced a problem with popup blockers that I had never experienced, and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this same problem and know what might be done about it. What happened with some of my students when they attempted to login to the MOO was the popup blocker prohibited the second MOO window where you actually enter the moo to open. I'm not sure how popup blockers got installed on some of the machines (but that's another matter). I have always wondered why two windows need to be open for EnCore (many non-computer literate students get startled and disoriented when they accidentally click into the background window and the current "inside-moo" window minimizes--they think they have to log in to the moo again). I suppose it is the Xpress client working, but I wonder if only one window is needed. We will probably delete the popup blockers and be able to access the MOO fine, but I was wondering about potential problems for students at home or in another open lab where a popup blocker is installed. Does anyone already have some instructions for dealing with popup blockers (I'm always wanting to update my Login Problems page)? The only solution was to either turn off the popup blocker or press the key that lets a link override. The specifics are going to depend upon the blocking software. Holding the Shift or Control key when you click to login may fix it. Some blockers also allow you to okay entire sites--so you might look for a similar option and just okay all popups on the alamoo domain. And yes. I posted about that to the enCore list on 28 Jan, and we've modified Achieve's login page with the instructions for resolving the problem in Netscape's case. I've not seen it with IE, but it's a simple fix for Netscape. I've also included it in my own student cheat sheet. And yes--you'll see it happen more as more users update their Netscape. As an aside, you don't have to totally disable the popup block--just add your site to its list of accepted popups. If you need those instructions, go to Achieve's login page--they're in the blog toward the bottom of the window. I ran into this last spring on my home machine, and rather than worrying about solving the core problem just added the following parenthetical sentence to the paragraph about logging in to my AcadeMOO site:

To log in as a guest, just type 'guest' in the User ID box in the left frame, leave the Password box empty, and click the Log-in button. If there's a way to stop the MOO windows from looking like a pop-up, I'd be delighted to hear about it, but I haven't had reports from students of difficulties (I assume they're turning off pop-up blockers if they need to).

All the best from Michigan,

Tess

Our MOO's login screen has this message: If you have an existing character, and your login just returns to this screen instead of to the XPress main screen, it probably means you have popups disabled. Just log in and then use this link: XPress client. The "XPress client" link then points to a href="http://www.phoenyx.net:7000/Xpress_client/vertical_layout/" target="_main" so that it'll open in the top-level version of the same window. (It'll whine about "Permission denied" if the link is clicked before login.) -- Karen J. I was actually talking about Netscape in this case; the new version (7.01) has incorporated a popup blocker as one of its default features. You can add the site to its accepted list, or disable the thing altogether. All bets are off for anything else, though.
