I used to have WinMOO locally for testing purposes and never had problems loading a DB from an UNIX system. If I remember well, passwords have to be set again because the "crypt" function uses a different algorithm in WinMOO, but this issue might have been fixed over time. If it is the case, you should be able to boot the MOO server normally and get to the login screen, see players using the "who" command, but trying to "connect" will always give you an invalid user/password error. The first thing to do would be to login using the Emergency Wizard option and change your wizard player's password to a valid one. I.e.: ;#2.password = crypt("foo"); ... gives "foo" password to the ArchWizard. You should now be able to log normally using this player. There is now the problem of fixing passwords for all other users - usually you'll email new random passwords to everyone and invite them to change it upon first login. There are lots of ways to do it, should it happen don't hesitate to query back the list for help in this step :) As for "what is involved": when installing the new server simply follow your enCore and MOO Server installation instructions as if installing a new MOO. Once everything is set up, transfer your MOO Database to the new host and boot the server using it. You may not be able to connect via the web directly, so use telnet. Use @configure to set any option that might have changed (like addresses and ports). Once everything is set up, web access should work correctly. Also, don't forget to move custom web content (for instance, if you are using VASE for users to upload file. VASE would also need to be reconfigured I guess). If I remember well, passwords have to be set again because the "crypt" function uses a different algorithm in WinMOO, but this issue might have been fixed over time. Everything you said to lennie sounds good to me, except the above. I seem to remember that windows likes to add CR and LF to its database's during checkpoint and Linxu DOES NOT like them. It will in fact panic on boot. I've always had to use a dos2unix converter to run a winmoo DB in a *nix box. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The rest sounds good. FYI The part about the ports doesn't matter except for chaning settings in the setup and in vase if your using it or any other port specific parts of the moo. REstarting the moo on 8000 instead of 7000 just means the users need the new port for telnet. I would like to commemorate this day with the following two releases: 1) My dissertation _TraceBack: MOO, Open Source, and the Humanities_ has been released today under the Open Publication License. It is available in PDF format (343 pages) and can be downloaded from the enCore FTP archive. 2) enCore version 4.0 enCore version 4.0 represents a total overhaul of the Xpress client. While the interface has only received minor cosmetic improvements, all code generated by the system has been converted to XHTML 1.0 and a new set of utility verbs are now being used for tagging. This version introduces added flexibility such as screen resizing and much more. A new and improved version of the MOO mailer by Daniel Jung is also included. enCore 4.0 has been successfully tested with Mozilla/Firebird, Safari 1.1.1, and IE 5.2 on Mac OS X, and Internet Explorer 6.0 and Mozilla 1.5 on Windows. Please be advised that new features in this release may break compatibility with older browsers. Please NOTE: Downloading via the web site does not seem to work at the moment. I will have to talk to our sys admin when I get back to Texas next week, but in the mean time you can download via FTP. Open your FTP program and go to ftp.utdallas.edu Connect as anonymous and give your email as password Change directory to /pub/ah/moo Download to your heart's content! Enjoy, Dr. Jan ;) ------------ Changelog enCore version 4.0 - Changed argument separator from '&' to ';' at the recommendation of W3C. Please note, if you have verbs that send URL encoded data you *must* update the arg separator to ; or else your code will break. - Implemented an improved MOO mailer package by Daniel Jung. New features include searching, printing, mail preview pane, and general layout improvements. Thanks MUCH Daniel! - Transitioned from HTML to XHTM 1.0. Removed about 98% of all tagging from the code and created a set of new markup verbs on $encore_web_utils to handle all markup. Converted all tags from upper- to lowercase, enclosed all values in quotemarks, closed all tags, also empty elements. I.e Heckuva job ;) 99% of the system now validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. NOTE TO PROGRAMMERS: You are strongly encouraged to use the new markup verbs instead of writing tags directly in your code. - Removed property $httpd.expires - Added property $httpd.charset with value "ISO-8859-1" - Removed references to path, domain, and expires from $httpd:generate_server_response_header. This was done in order to set cookies properly in certain browsers such as Safari. This information is optional in the cookie header. - Added 'widescreen' options to $xpress_client.screen_sizes - Made Xpress client window resizable. - Added a : separator to the cookie string in order to remove the white space that was there before. This was done to achieve better standards comliance. Affected verbs are $Xpress_client:initialize_session (cookie encoding) and $httpd:authenticate (cookie decoding) - Removed MacOS specific checks from $Xpress_client:initialize_session. This code was originally added to deal with older versions of MSIE and Netscape. Newer versions of both browsers has made the check obsolete. These changes has made it possible to run Xpress in many more browsers. I have successfully tested this version of enCore in Mozilla/Firebird, Safari 1.1.1, and IE 5.2 on Mac OS X, and Internet Explorer 6.0 and Mozilla 1.5 on Windows. Please note that this means that enCore 4.0 will probably no longer work with some older browsers. - Simplified the login form generated by $xpress_login:login. Newer browsers has made the checks performed by the old code obsolete. - Changed layout of all tabular data in the system via css. - Using CSS instead of table for layout. Exception for tabular data where an improved version of $encore_web_utils:generate_table is still used. - Created new place holder named $xpress_misc for miscellaneous Xpress verbs and properties. This is a CGI application which means that it accepts unauthenticated requests. If your verbs require authentication to not put them here! - And many more tweaks to the interface. I.e
Heckuva job ;) 99% of the system now validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. __Jan Rune Holmevik, Dr. Art.____________________________________________ University of Bergen Department of Humanistic Informatics jan.holmevik@uib.no Sydnesplass 7, HF-bygget janruneh@utdallas.edu N-5007 Bergen, NORWAY http://lingua.utdallas.edu/jan From compass@nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca Fri Jan 9 13:01:34 2004 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Fri, 09 Jan 2004 13:01:34 %z (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id D37595BAA for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:01:33 -0600 (CST) Received: from mf1 (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 90E055A4B for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:01:33 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([192.168.1.6]) by mf1 (mf1 [192.168.1.8]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 16524-01-3 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:01:31 -0600 (CST) Received: from nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca (nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca [129.128.113.203]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A92D34A7 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:00:19 -0600 (CST) Received: from nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca (loopback [127.0.0.1]) by nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i09J0It9024468 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 12:00:18 -0700 Received: (from compass@localhost) by nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i09J0IQu008128 for encore@utdallas.edu; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 12:00:18 -0700 Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 12:00:18 -0700 From: Wesley Cooper To: encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] congrats Message-ID: <20040109190017.GA37524@nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-archive-position: 1015 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: compass@nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca Precedence: bulk Reply-to: compass@nifflheim.arts.ualberta.ca List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Heartfelt congratulations, Dr Jan. -- Wesley Cooper, Prof, Dept of Philosophy, Univ of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E5 CANADA http://www.arts.uaberta.ca:3000 From ronan@nwe.ufl.edu Fri Jan 9 13:51:16 2004 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Fri, 09 Jan 2004 13:51:16 %z (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 536B35BAA for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:51:16 -0600 (CST) Received: from mf1 (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 230B94CF8 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:51:16 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([192.168.1.6]) by mf1 (mf1 [192.168.1.8]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 19726-01-35 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:51:11 -0600 (CST) Received: from lakemtao02.cox.net (lakemtao02.cox.net [68.1.17.243]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E819834F7 for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:51:09 -0600 (CST) Received: from truck ([24.170.200.138]) by lakemtao02.cox.net (InterMail vM.5.01.06.05 201-253-122-130-105-20030824) with SMTP id <20040109195109.CFKM2297.lakemtao02.cox.net@truck> for ; Fri, 9 Jan 2004 14:51:09 -0500 Message-ID: <001101c3d6e9$ed6689b0$8ac8aa18@truck> From: "ronan" To: "'encore'" References: <5.2.1.1.0.20040109083520.023fa2a8@accdvm.accd.edu> Subject: [encore] Re: Congratulations to Dr. Jan Rune Holmevik! Thanks to Daniel setting me straight, I see there's nothing wrong with :tell_contents, and when going into the MOO through telnet you can see objects and exits just fine. I followed up Jan's suggestion by renaming my old 'encore' directory and installing a completely fresh 4.0, and carefully chmoding directories to 755 and files to a+r. Also I checked the base URL, which hasn't changed from pre-4.0 and it seems all right. The results were the same. Everything looks great (the round icons at the top show nicely, etc.), except that exits, objects, and players aren't shown. Any thoughts about how to proceed would be welcome. I can't understand how this could be the perms (after all, there is no error and no broken IMG and link, right, there is just a big fat white nothing?). I am almost convinced that it must be an HTML source code issue. It really depends on how your #62 looks like, if it's a $webpage or a $room. Is this a problem on ALL the rooms? Having a look at Lingua's #62, you will see the source code stating [meta-stuff] The Courtyard [image and map] and THEN comes the contents table:
You see:
and so on. This is something strict browsers would choke on (or rather: render as written, not as intended); the file is ended by before the contents is shown. This might be ONE answer. Another one might be that there are HTML comments like the following on the page. Consider an audio or visual contents commented in this way: I have found this to not display the moo page completely when there are several such blocks. Changing this to the following syntax did the trick for me: bla bla bla bla bla bla bla When you have checked these two issues (and probably fixed them, if needed) and if you are still struggeling, send me a password to your MOO (I'm intrigued). I have been playing around with running my own Lambda based MOO off of the standard/small database. I got that working no problems. But I wanted more functionality, and the server went for months running with no changes. Then, just out of the blue, I stumble across a link to enCore. I say to my self, this might be what I am looking for. I downloaded enCore-latest [at the time, 3. whatever came before 4.0] and the linked-to moo server source. Compiled, installed, and connected from Internet Explorer just fine, but not with Mozilla. 4.0 came out, and is reported to work with Moz, so I grab that, and here is where I am at: Slackware 9 Linux Kernel 2.4.23 Mozilla 1.6 pre-built on 2003 12 10 libjavaplugin 1.4.2 Server is running on IP 10.0.0.125 Client is running on IP 10.0.0.125 I logged in and @configured to my local network [10.0.0. ] and the enCore Xpress 4.0 login page comes up just fine, when I log in I get the Xpress client page [more then before, thank you], but the Java applet fails with this error [in the Java Console] Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2 Using JRE version 1.4.2 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM ... load: class MOOtcan.class not found. java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: MOOtcan.class at sun.applet.AppletClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) ... And it repeats the "at sun..." line for a good many classes. Unfortunately I do not have any windows computers to test it on at the moment, but I will try it when I get back to work tomorrow while I am "Lab-sitting" the computer lab and have windows to play with. My assumption is that I need to reinstall my Java, as I am not sure where exactly this VM came from or if it was an official build. Does anyone have and suggestions or ideas? Thank you for creating enCore/Xpress, even if I have to build a second computer to host it at home and boot into windows to use it, I like the product. Hi Mark and others,

One way to do MOO patching

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D

This may not be "best practice" but it works well for patching our encore MOOs. I keep this info handy for the next patch job. = Being a busy academic IT research group downunder, we have to do all our own = IT support, so notes like this are useful to pass on to = others.

We announce a "stall" on building = and programming on the MOO while the patching is done. That way, MOO meetings continue = as usual and disruption is minimal. We then copy and mirror the current MOO db = onto a separate development host where the patching is done. Handy to have = mirror as backup.

(the main MOO is the production site on = ispg.csu.edu.au and the MOO database that is patched runs on the development site at = infstud.riv.csu.edu.au)

Both of our host machines run on FreeBSD UNIX and my desktop = computer I used for patching is an IBM Pentium 4 running Windows XP. The tools I = use for patching are:

·         Microsoft WordPad (not notepad or MS Word) = to open all the patch files and

·         the latest version of Pueblo UE 2.6b. = – see http://pueblo.sourceforge.net/

The big screen and enhanced client features of Pueblo UE 2.6b = are useful to check that each verb and property has been copied correctly, = although MOOTcan and others are fine.

(NOTE: The UE stands for Ultra Enterprises – the company = who has taken over development of Pueblo after Chaco = Communications dropped development and gave away the source code. So now Pueblo is an = open source MOO client).

After setting up the mirror sites and reading the notes by Jan = and Cynthia, then download the patch files to the desktop PC from http://lingua.ut= dallas.edu/encore/download.html is done. Patching is then simply done by:

1. Open the patch file in Word Pad and COPY from the beginning, = a chunk of text at a time, ending the “chunk” with line a period = “.” character to signify the end of a verb or a blank line to signify the = end of a section.

2. Connect to the MOO via Pueblo and PASTE the = chunk of text into the Pueblo text window where all text and commands are = entered.

3. Compile each verb or property by simply hitting the = “enter” key.

4. Reading the text in the window to see that all has been = programmed OK the first couple of times is good so that you get familiar with the = “action” of compiling a patch file into the db.

5. Toggle back to the patch file and repeat until the end of the = file

6. Open next patch file if you have more to do and repeat from = step 1.

7. Copy any files needed to the encore directory (eg new = MOOtcan, images etc)

8. Test the MOO, shut it down and also the main MOO, copy the db = file over to the main production site.

9. Restart your newly patched MOO

I have successfully fixed K9MOO from 2.0.5 and done 15 patches = up to version 4.0 on infstud, ready for transfer to the main site on ispg. = That will teach me to be a lazy patcher! It took me longer to “bite the = bullet” as Mark suggests.

The 15 patch file sizes reflect the versioning, where the = biggest patches (about half a megabyte each in size) were going from version 2.1.1 to = version 3.0 and finally going from 3.3.4 to version 4.0.

Some of the extra files (images etc) for the 3.2 and 4.0 patches = plus a later version of MOOtcan have to be copied to the encore directory where = the MOO is configured, in order to complete both of those patch = installations.

The 15 patches files are about 2 megabytes in total length from = took about 2 hours on K9MOO… boring and repetitive, but done and the = results can be seen at http://infstud.riv.csu.edu.a= u:9000

I hope those notes based on my experiences are useful. It works = for me.

Okay I am getting ready to bite the bullet and upgrade to 4.0 (I = have

Patches or starting fresh and migrating = everything....

Any pointers on merging databases would be = appreciated.

A complete 4.0.1 package as well as the 4.0.1 patch can be downloaded from http://lingua.utdallas.edu/encore/. The 4.0.1 patch addresses a few bugs that were inadvertently introduced in the main release. It also contains a fix for a security hole in the Xpress MOO mailer that Wade Wesolowsky brought to my attention last night. This security hole exist in all enCore MOOs since version 3. If you are running a version 3.x-based MOO we advice you to apply the following security fix from the 4.0.1 patch: @program $xpress_moo_mailer:permission_to_read "==========================================================="; "Copyright (C) 1999-2004, Jan Rune Holmevik"; "Verb that checks to see if user has permission to see requested"; "folder or mail message. Returns true (1) if user has permission,"; "else returns false (0)"; "Added additional checks to make sure users can't read other players"; "mail. Thanks to Wade Wesolowsky"; "==========================================================="; {user, folder} = args; cm = user.current_message; cm[1..2] = verb == "@rn" ? {{this, @cm[1..2]}} | {}; valid_folders = {user}; for item in (cm) if (item[1] == user) "Folder is the user"; valid_folders = {@valid_folders, item[1]}; elseif ($object_utils:isa(item[1], $mail_recipient) || $object_utils:isa(item[1], $big_mail_recipient)) "Folder is a mailing list, grant access if user is wizard or if folder is readable"; if ($object_utils:has_property(item[1], "readers")) if (user.wizard || item[1].readers == 1) valid_folders = {@valid_folders, item[1]}; endif endif endif endfor if (folder in valid_folders) return 1; else return 0; endif . enCore 4.0.1 Changelog - Upped default quota to 100.000 bytes for new installations - Fixed a css format problem in $encore_web_class:css Introduced in 4.0. - Fixed a layout issue with $webpage:_html. Introduced in 4.0. - Fixed a small problem with $administration_module:batch_make_player that was introduced in 4.0. - Added task_perms to $prog:@code in order to prevent folks from viewing non-readable code. - Added additional permission checks to $xpress_moo_mailer:permission_to_read in order to plug a critical security hole that allowed users to read other player's mail as well as wiz only lists. Thanks to Wade Wesolowsky for bringing these last two issues to my attention. I am setting up a new MOO w/4.0 enCore, and I want to integrate the MOO login for my students with other items I use--basically a php based CMS (Drupal) and a Flash Communication Server video conf space. I can use a single login that checks off LDAP for the other two; but I'd like to have them login one time to access all class spaces. This is a relatively easy process with php, but I don't know MOO network utils, etc, nearly well enough to write something from scratch for it. There are, it seems, a couple of elements necessary--one which would turn off the automatic password generator when a character is created, and one to shut down the new-password option within the MOO. I previously had built in Cold Fusion, a page to which students logged in, and after authenticating, it pulled their MOO number and password from a DB that I'd entered the info into as I created the characters. After getting that info, I had a frame that opened up with the Login info automatically entered--and the studnets hit "go" to launch the MOO. It worked okay, but seemed a cumbersome process--and one which if they changed their MOO passwords (even though they never needed to actually use them...several did change them) demanded my re-setting the password in the MOO. jeffwhite From Lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Tue Jan 27 21:01:03 2004 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:01:03 %z (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 827AB5BC7 for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:01:03 -0600 (CST) Received: from mf1 (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 531501782 for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:01:03 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([192.168.1.6]) by mf1 (mf1 [192.168.1.8]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 13290-01-15 for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:01:02 -0600 (CST) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 1E7B93490 for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:01:02 -0600 (CST) Received: from irvin.accdvm.accd.edu [10.1.11.59] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 20:21:48 CST Message-Id: <5.2.1.1.0.20040127201735.00aab250@accdvm.accd.edu> X-Sender: Lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.2.1 Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 20:23:51 -0600 To: encore@utdallas.edu From: Lennie Irvin Subject: [encore] Re: MOO integration with other apps? I know herve (rv) in Hawaii was doing some interesting things with integrating the MOO database with some another database, but I don't know where he is with that. I believe that Old Pueblo MOO created a way to integrate their University database with their MOO (so that students would be automatically registered also in the MOO for particular sections... I think). I'd love to see how you are setting up Drupal as a course platform and then how you would integrate MOO into it. The Flash video space sounds interesting too--do you use the flash video conferencing within the MOO? Are you coming to the 4Cs in San Antonio? I'm working on a MOO at Ohio University for writing purposes (writing enriched courses, WID meetings, tutoring, etc.) and we are currently using 3.3.2 enCore...I'll be meeting with my boss and the tech team in a few days. Can anyone briefly outline the benefits of an upgrade or point me in the direction of a document that explains the features of 4.0? Thanks for your time....
