Works like a charm here, but it would be nice if some of you could test it as well and give your two cents (different browsers, different kinds of mail boxes). Some features: * Fixed a security hole which could lead to sending and deleting and subscribing to maillists unwillingly. * Added an outbox where a copy of all outgoing mails is stored. The OutBox can be browsed and handled just like the InBox. * Added a preview pane which lets you navigate and read messages in the same window. Links appear to make the message appear in a new window, quicklink to reply and a print command. Preview is optional (on/off for the user). * Added a search function and a result display which lets you navigate through searches. * Added a recovery function which makes composed messages reappear after a send error. * Added a list of language strings on the object for easy translation or customization. * Added a multiple message delete function. * Added a customizable sound property which overrides the system choice (URL). * Added a user property to define the number of messages per page. * Added an object editor section to edit these properties * Made a new contents table and mail head layout, graphical multilevel quoting style, search string highlighting. * Made all produced HMTL code XHTML compatible: followed style recommendation (lowercase, closed non-empty elements, terminated empty elements, quoted values, no minimized value pairs) * Included an uninstall section Commented code may be downloaded here: http://lingo.uib.no/daniel/code/moo_mailer There are screenshots as well. The code can be pasted right into the command line. AlaMOO is still experiencing some problems, and I was hoping some of you might provide a little perspective and help. On 11/12, AlaMOO lost about three weeks of uptime, and we have not been able to restore this lost data (alas).

Cause(s) of the problem--how could it happen?
It seems pretty clear to me now that the current database running in the MOO was replaced by either the moo.db or the moo old.db.  The date for those files was 10/21 which matches with the version of the moo that was running after the problem occurred.

I know that upon a moo server reboot the RAM version of the MOO is written to the moo.db and moo.old file, while the moo new.db keeps a continuously updated version of the MOO via checkpointing.  I was wondering if anyone might know of what could have caused one of these older versions of the moo db to be written instead of the moo new.db.  We have done mooserver reboots since the problem and not experienced the loss of data, so I believe our restart batch file is correct.

One coincident factor that might have contributed to the problem may have come from my actions.  I am able to "see" the AlaMOO folder on the ranger.accd.edu server.  Even though our technicians run weekly tape backups of the whole server, and do a dynamic backup of the server nightly, I have been doing my own clandestine backup by copying the AlaMOO folder onto my own workstation.  I simply created a dated backup folder and copy the MOO into this new folder.  I have copied the AlaMOO folder this way once or twice a month for the last two years.

On the particular day when the problem seems to have occurred, I did one of my backups.  However, this time I experienced an error message I have never had before.  The flying folders were interrupted with an error message saying the copying could not proceed because of a file sharing problem with winmoo.exe--file already in use.  I closed the error message and it stopped the copying.  I thought about it for a little while, and then tried the copying again.  This time the copying was successful without an error message.  Could this problem with copying the folder and the file sharing violation with winmoo have caused the problem?  How?  How come I haven't experienced this file sharing error in the past (and I just tried the copying a moment ago and the error did not occur)?

How do you restore lost data from a backup copy?
What is the sequence for restoring lost data?  What file(s) exactly do you replace?
Do you copy a backup version of moo new.db over the current version of the moo new.db and then reboot?  Do you recopy all three backup copies of the moo db into the current MOO directory and then reboot?  Do you shut down the moo, then copy in the backup copies, and then restart the moo server?

I appreciate your help and perspective on this problem.  Thanks!

Lennie

If your old server binaries give you any problems simply download the 1.8.1 source code from the enCore web site and recompile. Upgrading from 1.0 to 3.3.4 is going to be quite a job :) Before you start you need to determine to what degree your existing database has been modified locally. If there's been substantial changes made to the core you will have to incorporate these into the enCore patches or else those modifications will be overwritten. Proceed slowly and test your MOO after each patch to catch and problems. Feel free to utilize this list for support if you run into problems. Another way to do this is to start fresh with a 3.3.4 core and 'recreate' as much of the old MOO as you want. What I did in my multilingual design (some of my running MOOs) is: strings = user:lang().xpress_moo_mailer_strings where user:lang() returns a language object: user.lang == "German" ? => $germ_utils (with German strings) user.lang == "French" ? => $french_utils (with French strings) etc., all children of $lang_utils -- which also is the default return value for that verb and carry the English strings. I don't think the strings should be on the user (the same goes for pronouns etc.), for language switching reasons (or gender, for that matter). I took all out of that to make it a distributable version. A design like that should be global, and it seemed like an overkill to me to introduce $lang_utils just for the MOO Mailer. >Also, I prefer to use ALL-UPPERCASE variable names for data types and >errors (INT, LIST, E_PROPNF, etc.) only but that's a matter of taste. You need to write a builtin that does that. You could probably crib a large part of it from time(), with a couple caveats: - To avoid any race conditions, you want a single builtin to return seconds and microseconds, not just microseconds. Otherwise, you could get problems when the microseconds wrap around at exactly the wrong time, eg in: seconds = time(); "Wrap around (microseconds become zero, seconds bumped by one)"; micros = microtime(); "Now it's nearly 1 second later than we think."; - Depending on the resolution you need, you want either to return a FLOAT (C double, IIRC, not C float) or a {INT, INT}. Also, the actual resolution and accuracy you can get are hardware- and OS-dependent, making it hard to write portable MOO code using this feature. > BTW: Counting seconds since 1970 and knowing that the largest integer the > MOO is capable of handling is 2147483647 means that we can run this > database continually until Mon Jan 18 19:14:07 2038 PST. Works like a charm here, but it would be > nice if some of you could test it as well and give your two cents > (different browsers, different kinds of mail boxes). Some features: Looks nice at first glance (haven't tried running it). 2 things jump out: - $Xpress_MOO_Mailer:send_mail is Yet Another Verb That Needs Player Set. $mail_agent:send_message calls $mail_agent:raw_send, which may call player:notify. (Changing $mail_agent:raw_send not to do that if player is invalid or unset wouldn't do the trick, as someone will eventually get a custom :notify_mail that relies on player being set.) Inserting: player = user; just above the call to $mail_agent:send_message should do the trick. (BTW, that's also true of the stock 3.3.4 $mail_agent:send_message. *hint*) - I would verbify references to this.xpress_moo_mailer_strings as this:xpress_moo_mailer_strings(user), with the following definition: @verb $Xpress_MOO_Mailer:xpress_moo_mailer_strings this none this rxd @program $Xpress_MOO_Mailer:xpress_moo_mailer_strings return this.(verb); This paves the way to a multilingual setup, eg by changing the above to: {user} = args; return `user.(verb) ! E_PROPNF => this.(verb)'; (Yes, I know this has problems of its own, but it's a step in the right direction, IMO.) Also, I prefer to use ALL-UPPERCASE variable names for data types and errors (INT, LIST, E_PROPNF, etc.) only but that's a matter of taste. -- "I'd ask if you'd found the right sort of isolated wasteland for your citadel of dread yet, but that would be a silly question; you're in Utah, after all." --ESR to Darl McBride (Chief Excessive Ossifier of Squandered Clues Obstination), in http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/mcbride.html From fox@vader.aacc.edu Thu Dec 4 01:31:32 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Thu, 04 Dec 2003 01:34:59 %z (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id D48275BC7 for ; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 01:31:32 -0600 (CST) Received: from mf1 (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id A3FC8B322 for ; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 01:31:32 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([192.168.1.6]) by mf1 (mf1 [192.168.1.8]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 03712-01-75 for ; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 01:31:32 -0600 (CST) Received: from vader.aacc.edu (vader.aacc.edu [12.167.138.28]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 721D634C2 for ; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 01:31:29 -0600 (CST) Received: from vader.aacc.edu (IDENT:XexVxWyzsznlpnyx2PJgj7MLhzv7GvtB@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by vader.aacc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id hB47V6sn018998; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 02:31:11 -0500 Received: from localhost (fox@localhost) by vader.aacc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8/Submit) with ESMTP id hB47V6dC018895; Thu, 4 Dec 2003 02:31:06 -0500 Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2003 02:31:06 -0500 (EST) From: "PauAmma@Falcon aka Michel@Achieve" To: Daniel Jung Cc: encore@utdallas.edu Subject: [encore] Re: MOO Mailer package: Michael's comment In-Reply-To: <5.2.0.8.2.20031204012058.01a99430@alf.uib.no> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-archive-position: 979 X-Approved-By: cynthiah@utdallas.edu X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: fox@vader.aacc.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: fox@vader.aacc.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore On Thu, 4 Dec 2003, Daniel Jung wrote: > >- I would verbify references to this.xpress_moo_mailer_strings as > > this:xpress_moo_mailer_strings(user), with the following definition: > > I already did that... Thus texts are normally run through a verb $encore_web_utils:detect_urls(user, text), for clickability. Check out this verb. The third, optional, argument is "treat as html", defaults to 0. If you set that to 1, no tags are tagged. The solution: 1. Don't write tags (at least no a-tags and p/br-tags). or 2. Specify that the default in the verb should be 1 or 3. build a property on the object letting the owner decide if the verb should be run; e.g. text = $encore_web_utils:detect_urls(user, text, toint(object.text_treat_as_html) ? 1 | 0); Should have a radio button in the edit note text section which says "yes | no" on this as well, for easier setting. I have made this in a couple of generics. Works fine. Another thing is the wrapping in this verb, which isn't sophisticated enough for instances like
and the like. Part of the problem is the :insert_line_breaks(text) verb, which also causes trouble in rendering tables correctly. I might come back to this later of this list, since I wrote a workaround for that. - Daniel From sscinica@richmond.edu Mon Dec 8 16:51:22 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Mon, 08 Dec 2003 16:51:22 %z (CST) Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from iq1.utdallas.edu (iq1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.7]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E99A45BB3 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 16:51:21 -0600 (CST) Received: from mf1 (mf1-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.8]) by iq1.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA0E05A8F for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 16:51:21 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx2.utdallas.edu ([192.168.1.6]) by mf1 (mf1 [192.168.1.8]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 08850-01-12 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 16:51:20 -0600 (CST) Received: from monty.richmond.edu (monty.richmond.edu [141.166.188.13]) by mx2.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id CFBAC34A2 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 16:51:19 -0600 (CST) Received: from penny.richmond.edu (penny.richmond.edu [141.166.188.34]) by monty.richmond.edu (8.11.6/8.11.6) with SMTP id hB8MpBQ08367 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 17:51:11 -0500 Received: from polyester.richmond.edu ([141.166.188.14]) by penny.richmond.edu (SAVSMTP 3.1.2.35) with SMTP id M2003120817511106515 for ; Mon, 08 Dec 2003 17:51:11 -0500 Received: from urmail-ag.richmond.edu (urmail-ag.richmond.edu [141.166.183.2]) by polyester.richmond.edu (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id hB8MpA817437 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 17:51:10 -0500 Received: by urmail-ag.richmond.edu with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Mon, 8 Dec 2003 17:51:10 -0500 Message-ID: From: "Scinicariello, Sharon" To: "'encore@utdallas.edu'" Subject: [encore] Installation Problem Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2003 17:51:00 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: text/plain X-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-MailScanner-SpamxCheck: not spam, SpamAssassin (score=0, required 5) X-archive-position: 983 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: sscinica@richmond.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: sscinica@richmond.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: X-List-ID: X-list: encore I wrote last week about upgrading the MOO I inherited from enCore 1.0 on version 1.8.0p6 of the LambdaMOO server to 3.3.4, the whole installation to run on RedHat 9. We decided not to worry about an "upgrade," but to start completely over. The system administrator installed RedHat 9--with Apache as the web server--and then followed the instructions (http://lingua.utdallas.edu/encore/installation.html) for installing enCore and the LambdaMOO server (ftp://ftp.utdallas.edu/pub/ah/moo/LambdaMOO-1.8.1.tar.gz). The problem: we are able to telnet to the MOO, but we are not able to access the web interface from anything except localhost. And only the login page works; attempting to log in results in another error message. Clearly something is configured incorrectly. The current setup: home/cow (does it have to be named moo to work?) contains the following: enCore.db enCore.db.new enCore-latest.tar.gz enCore.log enCore.log.old LambdaMOO-1.8.1.tar.gz moo (executable) MOO-1.8.1 (directory) restart (executable) The encore directory is located in /var/www/html/encore Help? Solving this may answer our other questions, which mostly involve the way servers need to be configured on this campus for security reasons. The basic questions are whether the apache server needs to be configured to use port 7000 and how open does that server have to be for the MOO to function? Thanks for your help on such basic questions.
