I'm trying to port the key elements of the RPGCore over to my enCore based MOO. The $player_class in the RPG core has many verbs and properties I would like to be able to have my normal players use when doing quests in a Role Playing Environment. They don't normally need them however. Rather than porting all the RPG functionality over to all my users permanently, by adding the verbs and properties to the $player_class, is it possible to create a temporary player class? Can you switch a player from one class to another without messing things up? Along similar lines does a feature object add properties as well as verbs to the user who has added it? Perhaps a RPG Feature object would work as a sort of "ticket" to the quest. Thanks for any help or suggestions. People can then @chparent themselve to it if they want RPG capabilities or back to standard player-class when they get tired of it (they would then loose all specific RPG customization - but all super-class settings should be kept intact). Such "custom" classes are actually used a lot (for instance, BayMOO has its own "RPG-Class" using this very same method). I'm though worried about what you mean by "temporary". If you mean to set and unset the RPG class automatically as needed (for example, when a player enters a specific location) I would strongly suggest against it. Although probably feasable, it would require a lot of hacking to archive RPG-related settings (since they would be lost when switching back to standard classes) and much more ressources and checks than needed. The RPG-class should remain permanently set once the player decides to become an "hero", and it should be up to the RPG-specific commands themselves to do a check to see if they can execute or not. For a simple example, you could create a new instance of the generic room which would be the "$RPG_room" and make a check at the beginning of each RPG-class verbs to see wether the player is in a room descending from the "$PRG_room" or not. If he is not, the verb simply returns (or "pass" execution to its super-class). It could even print back a nice little message like "Aye mate, pirates are at @go !" ... and if he is in the RPG-environment, the verb continues normally doing RPG-behavior. Also, what is interesting when making a standard room-parent is that you can create custom "enterfunc" and "exitfunc" so: - non-RPG players cannot access these rooms - RPG players can access these rooms, but only through specific areas - RPG-players can exit these rooms *only* if they teleport to non-RPG rooms or pass through standard exits (ie: cannot teleport from within the RPG-environment) - etc:) | Along similar lines does a feature object add properties as well as verbs to | the user who has added it? No, although there are always indirect ways to do it. For example, if you do a "clock" feature object that displays the current hour in a nice drawing and want the user to be able to see it in either "digital" or "analog" format (and save this preference), you could always keep a table into a list on the FO itself (this would be similar to: {{#player1, "analog"}, {#player2, "digital"}, {etc}} ... and fetch the custom setting from it. - Alexandre Borgia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin jepson" To: "enCore list (E-mail)" Sent: Monday, January 06, 2003 11:10 PM Subject: [encore] Temporary player class? | Happy New Year folks! | | I'm trying to port the key elements of the RPGCore over to my enCore based | MOO. | The $player_class in the RPG core has many verbs and properties I would like | to be able to have my normal players use when doing quests in a Role Playing | Environment. Typing 'help mail' gives you a series of commands, among which is '@rmmail', which removes a subset of mail from a specified list. The help text for this command is: --------------------------------- Syntax: @rmmail [] [from *] Deletes the indicated messages from your MOO email collection. By default, your current message is deleted. See `help message-sequence' for the full list of possible arguments. You get the message numbers for use here by typing the '@mail' command. There is no confirmation for this action, so be careful. While it is true that @unrmmail will be able to bring back the messages deleted by the last @rmm, any messages deleted before then are really gone, i.e., irrecoverable. See `help @unrmmail' for more information. This command may be used on other mail recipients (children of $mail_recipient), but only ones to which you have write access (you either have to own it or be on good terms with whoever does...). --------------------------------- So, for example, if you wish to delete mail on the *quota-log list, and you have messages 1-50, you would type: @rmmail 1-50 from *quota-log There is a command to undo that if you delete something you didn't want to delete, i.e. @unrmmail...but it's wise to be cautious when deleting in this manner. This command may be used for subsets of the mail collection, and as mails are numbered, you can enter strings of mail and leave others intact, such as: @rmmail 3-7, 9-10, 15 from *quota-log Hope this helps. I would do some tests to see if you have a server load or networking problem. Perhaps your network card(s) are not running at the proper speed. Check the server load with 'top' or 'ps' and the networking with 'ifconfig' and 'netstat'. Did you customize your MOO or web server (httpd) configuration before the restart, without writing customization to a configuration file? If you have an old copy of the db, you could start that on a different port and see if you might have some db corruption or other problems. Also check with your networking folks and see if they changed anything after the power blip. It's also possible that problems with the network developed because of that blip (maybe a switch is misconfigured, etc). cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From jan.holmevik@uib.no Sat Jan 11 20:02:06 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:02:06 -0600 Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from null-pmn.utdallas.edu (null-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35BB55BAD for ; Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:02:06 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by null-pmn.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F1681A1BE0 for ; Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:02:05 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx0.utdallas.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ns0 [127.0.0.1:10024]) (amavisd-new) with LMTP id 05241-01-43 for ; Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:02:03 -0600 (CST) Received: from alf.uib.no (alf.uib.no [129.177.30.3]) by mx0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4FBA38A89 for ; Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:01:57 -0600 (CST) Received: from c66.169.102.60.ftwrth.tx.charter.com ([10.0.1.201]) [66.169.102.60] by alf.uib.no for encore@utdallas.edu with esmtp (Exim 4.05) id 18XXRk-0005d7-00; Sun, 12 Jan 2003 03:01:56 +0100 User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.1.1.2418 Date: Sat, 11 Jan 2003 20:01:56 -0600 Subject: [encore] enCore 3.4 beta From: Jan Rune Holmevik To: enCore list Message-ID: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-checked-clean: by exiscan on alf X-Scanner: 5ee4a6d8a78211418fc4a2710702af92 http://tjinfo.uib.no/virus.html X-UiB-SpamFlag: NO UIB: 6 hits, 8.0 required X-UiB-SpamReport: spamassassin found; * 5.5 -- BODY: Uses a dotted-decimal IP address in URL X-archive-position: 738 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: jan.holmevik@uib.no Precedence: bulk Reply-to: jan.holmevik@uib.no List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-ID: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Well, as they say, the best way to move an open source project along is to scratch your own itch. While I was in the process of tinkering with the Xpress code so I could use Safari I also had to make some modification to the existing login procedures and the changes I've made should now allow more browsers to run Xpress. Back in the bad old days of Netscape and Microsoft both pushing their own standards, and the Mac platform lagging hopelessly behind, it was necessary for us to write login code for the specific browsers and platforms. The upshot of this was that we could only support Netscape and MSIE. Today, however, with the proliferation of Open Source based browsers and a recommitment to open standards things look much better. So one thing led to another and while I was at it I also rewrote the system so that it can now be used in conjunction with various pop-up blocking features. There are also a few other changes and fixes, but nothing major. As of today I have successfully tested the new version with the following browsers: OS X: MSIE 5.2, Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.3a, Safari 0.8.1 and OmniWeb 4.1.1. Chimera 0.6 will load up Xpress but I'm not getting any input in MOOtcan. The applet worked fine in Chimera 0.4 but is now broken. Opera will load only partially. OS 9.2: MSIE 5, MSIE 4.5, and Netscape 4.7 Since I don't have a PC I have not yet been able to test Windows and Linux browsers. I was able to log in using Red Hat Linux 7.2 (kernel 2.4.18-5), with KDE 3.0.3-0.7.2. Galeon 1.2.6 worked well. I could log in with Konqueror (same version as KDE), but there were problems with the right-hand window at times. It didn't synch cleanly with the Java applet chat window ("look" and other commands produced output sporadically). Netscape 4.7.6 and Mozilla 1.0.1 didn't work at all. But I confess that I haven't paid attention to those browsers since I discovered Galeon and Konqueror, so my versions may be out of date. I don't own any software from the Microsoft Fascism Trust (MSFT), so I can't help ya there. :) cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From jan.holmevik@uib.no Sun Jan 12 22:55:33 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:33 -0600 Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from null-pmn.utdallas.edu (null-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id EDBE65BBA for ; Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:32 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by null-pmn.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 38CC51A06C9 for ; Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:32 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx0.utdallas.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ns0 [127.0.0.1:10024]) (amavisd-new) with LMTP id 25817-01-53 for ; Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:31 -0600 (CST) Received: from alf.uib.no (alf.uib.no [129.177.30.3]) by mx0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8956838A90 for ; Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:30 -0600 (CST) Received: from c66.169.102.60.ftwrth.tx.charter.com ([10.0.1.201]) [66.169.102.60] by alf.uib.no for encore@utdallas.edu with esmtp (Exim 4.05) id 18XwdH-0004Ss-00; Mon, 13 Jan 2003 05:55:31 +0100 User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.1.1.2418 Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 22:55:33 -0600 Subject: [encore] enCore 3.4 beta From: Jan Rune Holmevik To: enCore list Message-ID: In-Reply-To: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-checked-clean: by exiscan on alf X-Scanner: 7fb74a0ce3def6ee8d65db7359531d50 http://tjinfo.uib.no/virus.html X-UiB-SpamFlag: NO UIB: -5 hits, 8.0 required X-UiB-SpamReport: spamassassin found; * -5.0 -- 'In-Reply-To' line found X-archive-position: 740 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: jan.holmevik@uib.no Precedence: bulk Reply-to: jan.holmevik@uib.no List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-ID: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Thanks to those who came to test the beta core. Hopefully later releases of these will work without any Xpress modifications. Please note that OS X versions earlier than 10.2 does not support Java properly and should not be used. Get your Jagwyre today! OS 9.2: MSIE 4.5 and 5 Netscape 4.75 exhibits strange behavior when trying to load Xpress. I'm going to investigate this a bit further, but I'm not prepared to spend a lot of time on it since OS 9 users can also use IE which works. Since I do not have a Windows or a Linux/BSD machine I have not been able to test browsers on those platforms, so please report your findings so I can make adjustments if necessary. After removing it I'm getting feedback now that these browsers loads Xpress without problems. Some people have reported that the client screen is smaller than it used to be. That is correct, I have changed the default from full screen to 900x600. Users can easily go back to full screen via the options. Also, I have now made the Xpress client window resizable. In some Windows browsers both the web and the chat areas will scale when you resize the window, in other browsers, including all Mac browsers that I have tested, the chat area does not scale. This is not a bug, but what appears to be a feature of either the OS or the OS specific browser implementations. Thanks to all those who have written with feedback. See change log below. You are encouraged to install this patch as soon as possible. Thanks to Scott Carmichael for contributions of code to this patch. This update is *NOT* the one that I have reported on earlier this month. As I continued to work on that patch I eventually decided to make some more fundamental changes that will require some time to complete. The most important of these changes is that I am now transitioning the whole Xpress layer to XHTML. In enCore version 3 I introduced style sheets for layout control, and going to XHTML now represents the next step in the move toward XML. Because of the rather substantial changes involved in this transition, the next version of enCore will probably be released as 4.0. It is too early to tell when the release date will be, but I can say that it won't be for quite some time. PS! Today, January 25th marks the 8th anniversary of Lingua MOO and that means it has been almost 9 years since we first logged into a MOO. If someone at the time had told us that we would still be doing this nine years later we would probably have called them crazy...well it looks like we're the crazy ones now, so here's to the crazy ones! :-) Cheers, Jan and Cynthia enCore 3.3.3 Change log - Added referrer check to $httpd:get. Clients are now only allowed to send url encoded data to the MOO if the referring page originated from the same MOO. - $player:notify now scans and strips URL encoded data from URLs received via the telnet applet. This prevents malicious users from sending unauthorized code to the MOO via MOOtcan. Thanks to Scott Carmichael for these contributions. __Jan Rune Holmevik, Cand Philol_________________________________________ University of Bergen jan@mac.com Department of Humanistic Informatics jan.holmevik@uib.no Sydnesplass 7, HF-bygget janruneh@utdallas.edu N-5007 Bergen, NORWAY http://lingua.utdallas.edu/jan From karper@expert.ics.purdue.edu Wed Jan 29 20:36:50 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:36:51 -0600 Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from null-pmn.utdallas.edu (null-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id A30AE5BBA for ; Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:36:50 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by null-pmn.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92D351A2A74 for ; Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:36:59 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx0.utdallas.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ns0 [127.0.0.1:10024]) (amavisd-new) with LMTP id 24154-01-12 for ; Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:36:58 -0600 (CST) Received: from expert.ics.purdue.edu (expert.ics.purdue.edu [128.210.10.11]) by mx0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id BCDD038A8B for ; Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:36:57 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (karper@localhost) by expert.ics.purdue.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id VAA00066; Wed, 29 Jan 2003 21:37:18 -0500 (EST) Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 21:37:18 -0500 (EST) From: Erin E Karper To: encore@utdallas.edu Cc: David Blakesley Subject: [encore] Pronoun Guide (Encore 3) released In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-archive-position: 754 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: karper@expert.ics.purdue.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: karper@expert.ics.purdue.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-ID: X-List-ID: X-list: encore Several years ago, I wrote a guide to Pronoun MOO, which later formed the basis for the guide released through the Encore Open Source Documentation project. I haven't managed to create the "generic" version for release through the Open Source Doc project, so if some kind soul would like to do that, I would be eternally grateful. If no one wants to volunteer, I will get around to it as soon as I can. Until then, people are free to download and adapt the existing version. This version uses material from the original guide writen by Lennie Irvin and myself, but also incorporates material from Tess Tavormina's AcadeMOO guide (with her kind permission). Many thanks to Lennie and Tess for giving me so much to work with. Major changes include new screen shots, updated explanations of how to use the object editor, a page on using MOO mail and making MOO mailing lists, and other minor additions and updates. If you have material that you think should be in the guide, or suggestions/corrections, please let me know and I'd be glad to add it. In addition to Lennie and Tess, I'd like to thank the Professional Writing Program at Purdue University, which has paid me to write both the original and the revision (and is hosting Pronoun and the web site that hosts the documentation), and Dr. David Blakesley, the PW program director, who's been incredibly supportive of my efforts. I'm new to this list, but I've been messing around with enCore for a few months now (when my schedule permitted). I'm really impressed with the project and am looking forward to see how it is used by the educational community. I'm more interested in the entertainment and community aspects of it myself, but obviously the uses for it are varied. Well...there's been a bug where when you click on a link or type the name of the exit in MOOtcan, focus is lost in MOOtcan. I've figured out a fix for this, but only for Mozilla-based browsers so far. The fix is a piece of JavaScript added to the end of a page and a modification to MOOtcan. I didn't see any instructions on the website, though, for how to submit changes to the community. Anyone have any insight on this? -Joel From lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Fri Jan 31 12:26:39 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:26:39 -0600 Return-Path: X-Original-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from null-pmn.utdallas.edu (null-pmn.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E3FD25BBA for ; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:26:38 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by null-pmn.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 562141A0916 for ; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:26:48 -0600 (CST) Received: from mx0.utdallas.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ns0 [127.0.0.1:10024]) (amavisd-new) with LMTP id 04159-01-78 for ; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:26:47 -0600 (CST) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by mx0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 872FD38A92 for ; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:26:41 -0600 (CST) Received: from GH208-LIRVIN.accdvm.accd.edu [10.11.14.204] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:27:00 CST Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.0.20030131121717.00b13ea8@accdvm.accd.edu> X-Sender: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:18:27 -0600 To: encore@utdallas.edu From: Lennie Irvin Subject: [encore] 1stMondays@AlaMOO--2/3 on Peer Response Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" X-archive-position: 759 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-ID: X-List-ID: X-list: encore 1stMondays@AlaMOO begins 2003 with a session next Monday February 3rd from 12:00 -1:00 PM CST on the subject of peer response using computers, both in a computer classroom and distance education setting.

***********************************
Session Description:
For many teachers of writing, peer response is at the heart of collaborative learning and the creation of a workshop environment in their classes.  What are the differences between peer response in a face-to-face situation vs. peer response through computers?  What are the similarities?  What is lost and what is gained?  In what ways does peer response fit theoretically with a computer learning environment?

The session will also discuss orchestrating peer response activity with various technological tools.  How do different tools handle the three key components of peer response: student drafts, teacher-directed peer response prompts and explanations, and completed peer responses?

Rather than a presentation, this session promises to be an open discussion of the topics and issues related to using computers for peer response.

Please join the discussion next Monday February 3
rd from 12-1:00 PM CST in AlaMOO's Conference Center
