They were, no pun intended, very helpful. Now, some more questions/situations. 1. This one may simply be a browser compatibility issue (though I have tried it on several browsers). When logging in using enCore Xpress (http://moo.sc.edu:7000/) no connection is established. One of the frames contains the message: ===== Starting enCore Xpress from server: moo.sc.edu Please Wait... If you are reconnecting and this window is not updated, click on the look button in the Xpress toolbar, or type look in the talk window to update it. ===== The login never advances beyond that. Any ideas what the issue might be? 2. Is there a way to perform a clean shutdown of the MOO from outside the MOO? I hope these questions aren't too silly. Many thanks. Your "/encore/mootcan" directory structure isn't the same than the latest release's. The browser actually seeks for: /encore/mootcan/mootcan-012.jar Which isn't there. The startup then hangs indefinitely. You can probably find the right "mootcan*.jar" filename and update the following property: $xpress_client.java_client_archive ... but I'd rather suggest that you go grab the latest release files and update the whole mootcan directory. > 2. Is there a way to perform a clean shutdown of the MOO from outside the > MOO? On Unix-like systems, you can kill it using the TERM signal - it will perform standard shutdown procedures. And if I remember well, on winMOO servers you can type CTRL-C in the MOO-console (I don't know about winMOO running as a service for NT though). Try them and check if you get the new log & DB files created into the MOO-directory. I will be throwing myself on the kindness of the list for help when I get stuck. I have gone through all the past list archives, BTW, and I will continue to do so to avoid bothering you kind folks. Right now I am running 3.0, and I'm getting an error when I use the XPress program editor, which is an inconvenience. I'm thinking I should upgrade anyway to 3.2. Am I correct that I have to install the patches before moving to 3.2, or can I download 3.2 directly? And I'm going to have to repeat a question I found in the archives (but no answer): how does one get rid of sleeping players who never logged out and probably aren't even on campus anymore, without blowing them away? Hopefully, at the end of all this, I'll be able to share a few things with the list. But thanks very much, in advance, for your patience. The manual way of disconnecting players is the "@boot " command - or is it what you meant by "blowing them away"? If this is a frequent behavior, you might want a simple automated task, for example: @verb me:@auto-b*oot none none none rdx @program me:@auto-boot for i in (connected_players()) if (idle_seconds(i) >= 7200) i:tell("It's time to go to bed!"); boot_player(i); endif endfor fork (3600) this:("@auto-boot")(); endfork . This code will boot players who have been inactive for more than two hours (or 7200 seconds - you can change this value to your own needs). Actually, they will be booted when idling for somewhere between 2 and 3 hours, since the code gets executed every hour (or 3600 seconds - you can, again, change this value). I'm not sure what you mean about "not blowing them away", but this kind of "kicking" has no negative effects (as banning the player from the MOO, etc.) - it simply disconnects the user. As for upgrading: I'm not aware of the issues between 3.0 & 3.2, but I suggest you patch the database from a standard telnet login. You then ensure that any broken dependencies between the web-features and the web structure won't cause problem while applying modifications:) - Alexandre Borgia From lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Tue Sep 10 13:55:12 2002 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list encore); Tue, 10 Sep 2002 13:55:13 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD23128904 for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2002 13:55:11 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id AEC721A1A5A for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2002 13:47:45 -0500 (CDT) Received: from GH208-LIRVIN.accdvm.accd.edu [10.11.14.204] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Tue, 10 Sep 2002 13:48:06 CDT Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.0.20020910132000.00aac170@accdvm.accd.edu> X-Sender: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu (Unverified) X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 13:42:27 -0500 To: encore@utdallas.edu From: Lennie Irvin Subject: [encore] Login trouble--SunJava and IE, MS Virtual Machine incompatibility? I think I now have reason to switch to Mozilla, but I'm still predominantly an Internet Explorer user, and I ran into a login snag that I was hoping some of you might know how to get un-snagged. I was dealing with a student who was having difficulties logging into the MOO I use, AlaMOO. The problem seemed to be the one I encounter most often these days--browser does not support java. My most frequent students with this problem have come from Netscape or AOL users. My fix has been to point them to the java 2 download site (or to update their browser). This student, though, was using Internet Explorer 6 (on I think Windows 2000 or XP). When she logged in to the MOO, the Xpress side would show, but the text side of the moo would not come up. Sounds like java to me. So I urged her to download the Sun Java2. Just to see, I decided to do it with my machine as well (IE6 and Windows 2000 as well). I downloaded the Java Virtual Machine from this site: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html Well, this seemed to wack out my Microsoft Virtual Machine and now I can no longer see the text side of the moo. Error messages galor. "Microsoft Virtual Machine you are attempting to install is a protected system component and can only be updated with a later release or the operating system or service pack." --"Attachment to running Virtual Machine failed." The java download also installed an awful shortcut on my desktop to "Java Web Start" that opens some sort of Draw program and some games! What is this? I guess internet explorer uses the MS Virtual Machine by default and when I tried to install the Java VM things got confused. My question is how do I untangle this mess--install recent Windows Updates (service packs)? How do I help my students who have this same problem? What are the most frequent login difficulties and how do we overcome them? Sorry for the long-winded message. Thanks for some help. Lennie L. Well, let me explain ... The "enCore Starting Point" (or $player_start) is the default home for all users. It is great to have this common public place, but for obvious reasons you don't want a hundred unanimated bodies laying around when their owners are not connected:) A special room has been created to avoid this: the $limbo (or "body bag"). This is where the players are actually sent upon disconnection. This turnaround is based on the fact that whether you have a custom home or use the $player_start room, the normal disconnection procedures will always try to send you home. On standard $rooms, nothing happens and the player just sleeps there. On $player_start, a custom "enterfunc" verb intercepts whatever enters and, if it finds it to be a "sleeping body", sends it to the $limbo. In a similar way, the $limbo has a special "confunc" that transparently moves the player back to their home upon connection: yes, not necessarily the $player_start but really any room set as their home! So, you see, the "Dormitory" you are talking about already exists. Simply: @move to $limbo ... instead of changing their rooms and @ejecting them. If for some reason players can @sethome on other rooms you'd like to keep clean & public, you can: @copy $player_start:enterfunc to ... if you have a lot such "public rooms", I suggest you rather create a new generic instance and @chown the rooms to it. I don't want to speculate on code too much since your case is pretty specific, but a simple automation might use this: max_sleeping_days = 60 * 60 * 24 * ; for i in (players()) if ((time() - i.last_disconnect_time) > max_sleeping_days) move(i, $limbo); endif endfor ... players who did not connect for will then be "hidden". - Alexandre Borgia PS: for the purists - one drawback to sending players to the $limbo from various homes is that @who on a disconnected player sent there will always tell he is sleeping in the starting room. I suspect that some other commands make the same assumptions ... happy hunting;) On September 10, 2002 01:18 pm, you wrote: > The solution is to change their home properties to an area the wizard > designates, then eject them. this assumes that the wizard owns the space > (usually the player_start object) from which to eject them. > > Ergo: > 1. create a "holding room" for these somnolent ghosts. The moo is working fine, and she's able to use it elsewhere, but not from home. Apparently, she's in the MOO and attempting to view pages from a web projector. When she types in the command, she gets the page she's going for, but this error pops up and ceases any activity w/the moo. She's tried in both NS and IE. I’m writing to invite everyone to the Grand Opening of “World of Diversity”, a Virtual Community created to promote diversity and encourage collaboration. It is also a place where you can meet friends, “build” your own house, objects, lands, etc., and include images, sounds, and text!  It is also a place where you can meet to work on projects with classmates without any interruption.  You will also be able to learn about different countries and Study Abroad opportunities.

On Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. we will have a “Virtual Ribbon Cutting” ceremony.  Dr. Sandra Gleason (Associate Dean of Faculty and Research) will be doing the honors of cutting the “Virtual Ribbon” and then we will celebrate with virtual music (which you really can hear!), virtual dancing, and virtual champaign and toasts all around!!

Then, starting at 11:00 a.m., and continuing throughout the day and on Wednesday, we will have an On-Line Conference on “Technology and Collaboration Across Disciplines” in which faculty from our campus, other PSU campuses, as well as other Universities (and tentatively a person from France!) will present on the use of technology in a number of different disciplines.  And, one of our students will be presenting on a “Student’s Perspective of Technology in the Classroom”.  It should be a wonderful conference!  To see the conference schedule, go to

If you are interested in seeing what “World of Diversity” is all about, you can “read” about it at http://diversity.ds.psu.edu/World_of_Diversity/index.html, or if you would like to just explore, send a message to psu_diversity@yahoo.com or djg25@psu.edu and I will create a USER ID for you.

I hope to see some of you there at the Grand Opening!  It would be nice to have a good turnout for this special event with Dr. Gleason!!  Please pass this message on to those at other locations!  The Conference will have discussions from a number of different disciplines, including Education, Foreign Languages, Women’s Studies, and Art/Art Education!!

Looking forward to hearing for you!

Best,

Debbie
