For many years I have used a computer program called the Daedalus Integrated Writing Environment with my writing classes in a computer classroom (that is until I started using the MOO). The object I'm dreaming of is basically the replication of an activity Daedalus has called Respond or Invent. Basically, Respond/Invent is like a form. There is the text of a question and then a textbox beneath it to fill in the answer. The program has preset question series or you can easily create your own. These question series are fabulous for guiding peer response or invention. Anyway, I know I can replicate Respond/Invent within EnCore by simply having a link to a form that I have created that lives on a web server. What I am interested in is integrating this form within an EnCore MOO. I think it would be pretty easy to have a $webobject that was within EnCore that could be edited pretty easily. The specific question I have is how to make the completed form public. Normally, the action of forms sends the answers to an email address. Could this form also be sent to a moomail address? Or better yet, could the $webobject form operates something like a recorder-- 1) It would ask you to name the new object (which is the filled out form) 2) When you complete the form it would automatically create a new object that it puts within the parent object (like a moo transcript is placed within the recorder object like a note within a container) 3) It would give you the option to email the new note like the recorder gives you the option email a transcript 4) Would it even be possible (since the verb that turns the completed transcript into a note must have instructions about placing the note within the recorder object) to choose a different destination for where the completed peer response would be placed or dropped? I know VASE operates something like this with question series that then get saved. Could you integrate a VASE object directly into a MOO room? It seems like this would be possible, but I thought some of you with better programming sense for the MOO would be able to let me know better. Thanks, Lennie Irvin _________________________________ L. We used DIWE in the past as well, and I have been using a VASE assignment to somewhat replicate this currently. But I think you're definitely on to something here, Lennie, because I know that I would certainly prefer something that saved a bit differently than the VASE assignment. As it stands right now, I have one assignment posted for "Revision Questions," but the students may need to use it for each essay of the semester, which means I need to go in, archive their answers and "clear it all out" after each essay. Of course, I thought I did that after one essay, and then got a panicked email from a student saying he couldn't get into the assignment, so I cleared everyone's out again. And, yeah, I deleted someone's work for the current essay. *sigh* Thank goodness it was "only" revision questions and not a draft of the essay. At any rate, if anyone has a solution for this, please post it to the list -- I think many of us might be interested in it! While we're at it, another problem is when a room gets recycled. The database never seems to get cleaned, it just cumulates rooms when updating ... and there's no destination check ... so don't get too nostalgic, or you'll get teleported into a recyclable instance (or worse, someone new object!;) - with errors, of course! Please note that I don't know if enCore or LambdaMOO released a new database recently ... the code is based on the MOOFrancais database, which is about one year and a half old. The code may then somewhat differ. ----- 1) Add the following line at the beginning of "$room_db:update": this:clearall(4); => Obsolete rooms will now be removed from the DB upon "manual" update. 2) create a "set_aliases" verb on $room, with "this none this" args and "rdx" flags. Put in the following code: for i in (this.aliases) $room_db:delete2(i, this); endfor rv = pass(@args); for i in (this.aliases) $room_db:insert(i, this); endfor return rv; => "@add/@rmalias" and other standard alias defining procedures will now update the room DB. 3) create a "set_name" verb on $room, with "this none this" args and "rdx" flags. Put in the following code: $room_db:delete2(this.name, this); rv = pass(@args); $room_db:insert(this.name, this); return rv; => "@rename" and other standard naming procedures will now update the room DB. 4) in "$builder:@dig", change the line: 30: other_room.name = room; for: other_room:set_name(room); => The room will now be added to the room DB as soon as it is created. 5) finally, in $room:recycle, at the end of the first "if" clause (I chose to put it before the "pass(@args);" line), put the following code: for i in ({this.name, @this.aliases}) $room_db:delete2(i, this); endfor => Recycled rooms will be removed from the room DB. ----- So here we go. The $room_db update is now automatic, and the few remaining cases will be handled the usual way by the update system. Ideally, one of the MOO tools mentioned below would be realised during that time, to be implemented and piloted in the coming academic year. Other project ideas may be considered. Please contact me at kschwien@tcd.ie for further details if you are interested. Thank you in advance, Klaus Brief Description of project: The CLCS has for the past three years developed, implemented, and evaluated an educational MOO for language learning purposes. Within the principles of learner autonomy and tandem learning (see http://www.tcd.ie/CLCS/tandem/), students have been paired up with German and Belgian students in learning partnerships using synchronous and asynchronous communication tools in a web-based virtual learning environment. The results from these projects have yielded a number of research articles and two PhD theses. We now intend to develop more specific language learning tools and implement them with those courses. These tools would involve: - A tool that analyses learners’ input and automatically provides translations of unknown words and examples of their use in context (similar to a concordancer). This is probably the most important tool we have in mind at this stage. - A tool that analyses the least frequent words in learners’ input and provides a morphological analysis of these words. - A tool that analyses MOO transcripts by learners in terms of bilingualism, mean length of utterance, etc., to support learners in assuming more control over their target language skills. ------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Klaus Schwienhorst Language Modules Co-ordinator Centre for Language and Communication Studies Arts Building Trinity College Dublin 2 Ireland Phone: Ireland +1 6083525 FAX: Ireland +1 6772694 Email: kschwien@tcd.ie MOO: Klaus at CLCS Campus (http://kontakt.tcd.ie:8000) Homepage: http://www.tcd.ie/CLCS/assistants/kschwien.html ------------------------------------------------------- From hewlett@u.arizona.edu Tue Jul 16 17:57:13 2002 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Tue, 16 Jul 2002 17:57:14 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 163CD288D8 for ; Tue, 16 Jul 2002 17:57:11 -0500 (CDT) Received: from salsa.newmex.com (salsa.newmex.com [65.112.216.18]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 22E2C1A1B71 for ; Tue, 16 Jul 2002 17:51:26 -0500 (CDT) Received: from [192.168.1.100] (hewlett.newmex.com [65.121.116.95]) by salsa.newmex.com (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id g6GMp8U73323 for ; Tue, 16 Jul 2002 16:51:08 -0600 (MDT) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.0.0.1309 Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 16:51:24 -0600 Subject: [encore] Problems with Encore Xpress and Mac OS X From: Marty Hewlett To: Message-ID: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-archive-position: 532 X-listar-version: Listar v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: hewlett@u.arizona.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: hewlett@u.arizona.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Listar version 1.0.0 X-List-ID: X-list: encore Hello, everyone: I'm quite new to this discussion and so this topic may have been addressed, although I did not see it in the list archives. When I initially tried to use encoreXpress to work in my MOO classroom (in the Old Pueblo MOO at the University of Arizona), functionality was disrupted. I could not comment or emote by pressing "enter". By experimentation, I found that comments would appear if I held down the Apple command key while pressing enter. Finally, when I quit encoreXpress, Explorer crashed. I did find out about the Java 1.3.1 Update 1. I downloaded this and installed it. This fixed the entry problems so that comments did appear as usual. However, Explorer again crashed. Any comments or suggestions would be most helpful. Marty Hewlett -- Martinez J. Here at UF's MOOvillle, we have an area called the "mooseum" in which we've archived some student work. We usually just deactivate the student account (by changing the password to something like "deactivated for mooseum." Since there are spaces in the pword, it becomes impossible to type. The advantage of our system is that the player/character who made the object is still there, sleeping soundly in one of her rooms. I am working on updating my EnCore Verion 2.1.1 to the latest version 3.2 and I can't seem to find any instructions for how to do it.  I've looked over the EnCore Administrators Guide and it has new installation instructions but nothing clear for updating versions.  Does anyone have a step by step guide for updating?

Also, when I looked over the Administrator's guide, I was intrigued by the mention of the "Built-in support for the MCP/2.1 protocol developed for JHCore is copyright (C) 1998 of Ken Fox. The MCP/2.1 implementation is also available separately, and under a separate license at: http://www.awns.com/mcp/

What is this MCP/2.1?  Do you need to install the "MCP/2.1 implementation" separately? and what does it help you do exactly?  Is it already installed?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

If you want the script, you can go to the official enCore website and download the latest enCore DB just to grab what is in the "vase" subdirectory ("vase.cgi" & "vase.css"). Put them in the "cgi-bin" directory of your webserver. You must then edit the "vase.cgi" file and follow the steps shown at the beginning of the file. You then need the $assignment_server object to be within the MOO. I don't know since when it is distributed with the enCore package, and it may be what you are missing... If you can't find it in your MOO (try: @d $assignment_server), I think the best way around is to get it from another MOO. This is a crude way to port an object from MOO to MOO (and it is probably better to do it in "telnet mode"), but it works pretty well: 1) create an object in your MOO with the same parent as the one you want to port. In your case, it would be: "@create $encore_web_object named Assignment Server". Note the object #. 2) go to the other MOO and make sure you have full read permissions on the object (if not, you may ask someone who has to do it for you). Type: "@dump $assignment_server". Now you must be patient since it can be pretty long - but you will get the entire "snapshot" of the object. 3) Copy all you got in your favorite text-editor. First of all, if you have been disturbed while doing this try to clean the unwanted messages from the log. Then "search&replace" every instance of object numbers with the # of the object you created in your MOO (step 1). 4) Paste everything in your MOO. This will finish to define your object. You should now have a working $assignment_server. Look at its properties, there are some things you must set (filelimit, dirlimit, uploads_enabled, script_path, MOO_name). Then, create another web object that points to it using the following URL: http://://manage.html or project_creation.html I think that's about it ... it makes some time I have played with VASE, I hope I'm not missing something. - Alexandre Borgia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia Haynes" To: "encore" Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 6:02 AM Subject: [encore] Post from Herbert Hrachovec | Hello, | | due to "historical" reasons my enCore 3.2 installation lacks VASE. The bug occurs about one out of three times I log into the MOO. The web side functions and all the links work fine. But, the text-only side doesn't appear or function at all--just a blank window. I tested this using a guest account, a wizard account, and several programmer accounts and it happened with roughly the same frequency. Any ideas?
