What you are saying makes sense to me. Let me see if I follow you. If I go into the generic player object and edit the .ts_client property and change it from 1 to 0 that should enable the look command to generate text in both the Xpress window and the text window? I'm still a bit confused: How come I am unable to see the descriptions of Notes or Letters when I LOOK (even though a description for the object note or letter has been set)? How come for a Room the description will show in the Xpress window, but not in the text window when the LOOK command is invoked? I'm not even clear how the generic player object could automatically take on different properties based on the method of connecting--telnet vs. Xpress? Perhaps I'm asking too many questions... sorry. My last response was not very clear. I was kind of in a rush. Lennie, you are correct. If you set your character's .ts_client property to 0 then you will see descriptions in both the Xpress window and in the text window. I don't recommend doing this because I don't know what other verbs or actions in Xpress are dependent on that property being set to 1. I also am not sure how the .ts_client property gets set to 1 when a character connects via Xpress. The way I see the descriptions working is this... The 'look' verb is defined on the $classroom, and $room objects. The $classroom:look verb eventually calls $room:look. The $room:look verb checks to see if you are trying to look at something in particular in the room (so the code checks for dobjs and iobjs). If you tried to look at some thing, say a letter, then it will call $letter:look_self. (In the code you will see dobj:look_self and iobj:look_self, but these translate to the class of object you are looking at). If you were not looking at anything, and only called look then the code will call $room:look_self (code looks like this:look_self). So, most classes of objects have a :look_self verb defined. Modifying this verb on an object or class of objects modifies the appearance of the object when somebody 'looks' at it. The :look_self verb usually calls this:description. Here is what our #1:description code looks like, other enCore Moos are probably the same, or similar #1:description this none this 1: if (player.ts_client) 2: if (player.update_web_display) 3: descrip = {tostr("You view ", this.name, "..."), tostr(" ")}; 4: return descrip; 5: else 6: player.update_web_display = 1; 7: return tostr("You view ", this.name, "..."); 8: endif 9: else 10: return this.description; 11: endif So, if you'll notice in line 1: the code checks to see if the character is connected through Xpress or through telnet. If the player is connected through Xpress the .description will not be displayed in the text window. (There is a lot of other code defining what is seen in the Xpress window, but I am just trying to explain why the descriptions do not always appear in the text window.) Instead you see "You view ..." If some objects do not have a specific :look_self verb defined then the :look_self verb from its parent is used and so on up the hierarchy. Here is our #1:look_self code. (Our $letter class does not have :look_self defined so it uses this code) #1:look_self this none this 1: desc = this:description(); 2: if (player.display_drawings && this.drawing && !player.ts_client) 3: player:tell_lines(this.drawing); 4: endif 5: if (desc) 6: player:tell_lines(desc); 7: else 8: player:tell("You see nothing special."); 9: endif In line 1: you'll notice this:description() is called. As we saw above depending on how you're connected determines what will be displayed as the description. I hope this is helpful. I know it's hard to write about details of code or code behavior, so if this is confusing I can try to clarify. When I got your mail I realised I had been using Netscape, not IE, so I tried logging in with IE and was successful. Overall I like the system, but it is very hard to get this kind of thing to work across multiple browsers. From time to time IE seems to lose the connection and I get error messages in the frames. Anyone else seen this? Still it is an amazing accomplishment, kudos to the programmers. At 01:55 am 09/05/02, Babin, David wrote: >Checked and rechecked my setup on Windows 98. I know that when I first downloaded Netscape 6 the browser did not log in to EnCore, though the old Netscape 4.7 did fine. I'm not sure what is going on with Netscape 6. ??? but to make it work I had to download the Java2 plugin--then it worked fine. You can get this plug-in off of this site: http://www.accd.edu/sac/english/lirvin/AlaMOO/logintrouble.htm I've never heard Jan address the compatibility issues with Netscape 6 (perhaps I missed it). I have also been wondering about future compatibility issues with Microsoft since I heard in a news report that WindowsXP does not support Java (I heard about Sun suing Microsoft about the issue). Does anyone else know anything about XP and Java and how that might affect EnCore (since it needs to run Java to function)? Since we are on login problems, I had a couple of students experience some log in difficulties coming from AOL (but some had no problem). I'm stumped on that one because I don't even know what browser AOL users use (some AOL version of Netscape?). Cheers, Lennie At 10:14 AM 5/9/2002 +0100, James Fryer wrote: >Thanks for your help. The mood was set via a verb @mood [mood], and if it was set to nothing then the mood mod was removed from the name. Has anyone ever come across this, and more importantly does anyone have the coad to be able to implement it on my moo. I would greatly apreciate any help, James. Someone may have done that. but the ability to edit a word document INSIDE a web browser and then save it back to a remote server is beyond moo at this point, though someone may have done it. You can upload documents using the file upload tool we wrote, and which is on every Encore moo. Click on the Xpress button and it should be there. It allows each user to upload files to the server, and takes care of management. It is very secure, since the moo does all the work on the user's behalf. Then you can put the url of the document in an object .url_address field that is available in the GUI by clicking on Objects>MyObjects>edit multimedia content. I'm working from memory, but that should be right. Then when you look at an object, there will be a link there going to the document. In this case, the guest connection. I'm not sure that the problem is in the programming. That's the standard code line that comes with enCore. You might try destroying and recreating all the children of $guest. Or it could be a firewall problem, and not in the MOO at all. >I have been receiving a traceback error on the verb "get" when I try >to log in as a guest on my Moo.
