One person (the owner of the room) may edit the room description, and the other persons (who are the shared_owners of this room) may add ,annotations'. This Annotation is appended at the end of the room description, with a note who and when this annotation was added. Of course, this is not the same as a fully functional Discussion group with threads and the like - but for our purposes it's enough. I have not yet put that code into the net, but if anybody is interested in it please mail me. The main reason for not releasing the code is the fact that it's a very ugly hack - and a simple copy&paste with minor changes from the room editing commands. Hi,

I've been having an intermittent problem with the "Generic Recorder and Player" (Object #155) in the Educational Toolbox of our Encore 2.0b12 MOO.   In many cases, it operates normally, turning on correctly, and upon shutting it off, the script asks about emailing the transcript, I do, and I receive a complete textual recording of the conversation.  But the shutdown also offers me a URL inside the MOO where this transcript is recorded in HTML format, and when I view the HTML version, I find it truncated with the following error traceback:

#32:execute_HTTP_request, line 77: Task ran out of ticks ...
called from #32:do_login_command, line 11 (End of traceback)

This seems to happen when I've a group of 10 or 12 participants in an online class; some will arrive late, and it looks like the log-in routine of the xPress Web Server (#32) somehow chokes the little recorder's html keeper.

Have I missed a common patch, or is there some workaround anyone can suggest?

Thanks in advance for your help!

An easier solution for me (since I have no hope of programming this idea) was to incorporate a web hosted (free) discussion board into the MOO. I created a webnote with a link to the webboard. After much searching, the best and easiest webboard I found was through cgispy (http://www.cgispy.com). It is not perfect since it does not allow for a reply of a reply and the board itself can take no more than 300 messages (I have to periodically delete messages to keep under the 300 limit), but it works. I can create up to 10 different forums that are active at any one time. If you or anyone else knows of another discussion board forum that might work better (I would really like WebBoard but it cost too much), please let me know. If you want to peek at how the discussion board works, take a look at this webnote from within AlaMOO: http://ranger.accd.edu:7000/558/ Cheers, Lennie ***************************************************************************************************** At 10:06 AM 3/18/2002 +0000, you wrote: I was wondering if anyone had developed objects to enable the management of asynchronous discussion groups with a user friendly web interface for the encore Core. Basically, perhaps, a version of $mail_recipient with a Web presentation of the messages, with a web form for posting new messages and with a threaded presentation. I am interested in this as I currently use such systems outside the MOO but it would be cleaner if I could bring it inside and use the same authentication and access management for both MOO and discussion group. If this is something that is already done I would of course like to use it. If not it is something I will probably develop myself (but I don't want to reinvent the wheel). -- Dr. John A.R. Thanks for the follow-up question, and sorry I wasn't clear...

When you LOOK at you recorder, are you able to read the Note that contains the transcript of the moo session (read <notename> or look <notename>)?  Can you read it through the MOO?  Is the problem coming when you enter the URL of the MOO note?  I'm not sure if I can help, but I wondered about how you were viewing the transcript.

I've tried several ways to read the stored information: when I 'look' at room that holds the recorder, I then click on the recorder's link and the web-display window gives me its description and contents (which I've named by a date), and when I click on that contents-link, I get the truncated html transcript.  This also happens when I type in the full url to this transcript, as you'd expect; and when I used the command line 'look' at the recorder and then looked at the content-object (named with its object number, #727), the html display was truncated.

However, when I try to 'read #727' I get the full transcript in the text (not the web-display) window--and this is what was sent me by email, as well.

This help at all?

I think if you tweak the room's 'tell' verb that can do what you want. You could also add an object to the room with the appropriate 'tell' verb -- in fact, I prefer that solution, because I don't like adding verbs to rooms, since recycling the room means I gotta copy off the verb (instead of picking up and moving the object). With 'suspend' you can make a verb pause. If you do this, make sure to set some sort of loop checking function so that a player who moves THROUGH a room (or pops in and out) doesn't get the text you offer. Something like: " start with a suspend to give the player a chance to read a bit "; suspend(3); if (player.location = this.location) " some talking code here "; suspend(5); " some more talking code here "; endif And actually, you might do something like the following, to make sure the player is still there after the second suspend: incr = 0; speech = {"Hello", "I send you this file", "to have your advice"}; while (player.location = this.location) player:notify(tostr(speech[incr])); inc = incr + 1; suspend(5); endwhile Note that I didn't check any of this code, but just typed it here; hopefully there aren't too many Perl-isms instead of MOO-isms :) But, the general ideas should work. best, cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From bmcmanus@ix.netcom.com Mon Mar 25 21:10:36 2002 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Thu, 28 Mar 2002 10:31:12 -0600 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08667288B9 for ; Mon, 25 Mar 2002 21:10:35 -0600 (CST) Received: from blount.mail.mindspring.net (blount.mail.mindspring.net [207.69.200.226]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 194771A0A7A for ; Mon, 25 Mar 2002 21:08:07 -0600 (CST) Received: from user-2ive7bf.dialup.mindspring.com ([165.247.29.111] helo=ix.netcom.com) by blount.mail.mindspring.net with esmtp (Exim 3.33 #1) id 16phJe-0002ii-00 for encore@utdallas.edu; Mon, 25 Mar 2002 22:08:06 -0500 Message-ID: <3C9FE62D.29B4B0A1@ix.netcom.com> Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 22:08:29 -0500 From: "Barbara F. One of the reasons for moving to enCore, besides its obvious superiority to Biogate for our purposes, is to improve access, since our client will not work with versions of Netscape above 4.70 (though we haven't yet tested it with 6.1); it also works poorly with many versions of IE. It is stated on the enCore web site that Xpress works with Netscape 4.08 and 6.1 for Windows; does it also work with 4.7+ Netscape browsers, since that seems to be what most computer labs these days are running? Like CupoMud, Xpress uses cookies for authentication. Does this mean that it cannot be used in schools that have a proxy server? That is definitely the case with our client, which causes many difficulties for pre-college teachers who want to use our site, since more and more schools are moving to proxy servers.
