Have a look at: http://www2.mars.org/~fox/moo/expat-binding/ I haven't tested it or even installed it yet, but I'm planning to use it as well, because I'd like to integrate a MOO into our learning environment (which exchanges data in XML). So I'll definitly work on this in the future. I'm thinking of maybe even implementing SOAP, but I'm afraid it'll be a lot of work to do. I'd be happy if we could exchange experience about that topic. When logging in to our MOO, the Xpress graphical side is not loading or displaying the graphical pages. The textual side seems fine. I am able to open the log in web page, but when I attempt to use my username and password from the log in page it seems like the MOO is not able to process them. Once I put in my username and password, the MOO begins to load but not completely. I don't get taken completely in to the MOOs opening location (AlaMOO Plaza) with all its descriptions. I get the telnet greeting and a cryptic line below that reads, "Either that player does not exist, or has a different password." When I type "Look" I get this message:"I don't understand that. Valid commands at this point are WELcome, Who, COnnect, CReate, Quit, UPtime, Version, REQuest, Help, or AUTOCONNECT." At this point, I am able to enter the MOO if I type in Connect then my username and password, but still the Xpress side does not show. It reminds me of some problems we had early on getting the @configure settings all correct, but I checked them and all the settings seem correct. I contacted the technician who keeps watch on the server and he says that nothing new or unusual has been done to the server. Has a file become corrupted perhaps? Here's a description of what is happening. I am able to access the login page (complete with the HTML graphical right side) but when I type in my username and password, it does not take me completely into the MOO. The Xpress bar shows up, the text side to the left comes up, but the right Xpress side does not load. On the text side at the bottom of the welcome message is this line: "Either that player does not exist, or has a different password." As I begin to type commands, it becomes clear I am not really connected. The MOO responds, "I don't understand that. Valid commands at this point are WELcome, Who, COnnect, CReate, Quit, UPtime, Version, REQuest, Help, or AUTOCONNECT." This response reminds me of when I did not have the base URL correct, but I have checked all the configurations and everything appears to be correct and as it was before the problem emerged. At this point, I can connect using my username and password, but only the textual side is active. One theory is that the parent of $parent has changed, but I looked and it seems ok. I'm not sure I would know if it had been changed. It seems like it must be something with the Xpress Client. To further the mystery, I was going in and out of the MOO using someone else's password (because they had thought the MOO had forgotten their password) and one time (only once...) when I was connecting from the text (after the Login, "Either that player does not exist or has a different password" failure), I was able to access the Xpress Client and see the graphical side. I have tried repeatedly since, and never gotten the Xpress to show. I don't know what is up, and sure would appreciate some help. This is the situation as it currently stands: One user can connect consistently from the office with no problems. At home, this user has 2 machines, one of which will allow him to connect once; all reconnect attempts generate the standard cookie error message. On a second machine, he is unable to connect at all, and gets the same error. All machines have java/javascript/cookies enabled. All are running at least IE5, and use Win98 (one home machine) and Win2K (other home machine and office machine). He has tested with Opera and Netscape with the same problems. Another user has a similar situation; 2 machines in the home, one will work inconsistently, the other will not work at all. Win98 on both machines using IE5. I myself occasionally experience this error message, but it is a fairly rare occurence. I run Win98SE and use IE5.5 Another user intermittently is unable to connect for a time period, then will spontaneously be able to connect again. He also uses Win98SE and IE5.5 In all cases, rebooting does not seem to help. The MOO is using enCore 3.0 and is running on an NT server using IIS4.0 Any help in identifying a solution to this problem would be appreciated as it is seriously hampering our projects. Hi all,

We are having two problems with 3.0.

First, many of our rooms do not show up by name using the @go command -- that is, when typing "@go testing", instead of going to the room called "testing," you get an error message that says '"testing" not found in room database.'  However, if you type the room's NUMBER ("@go #185"), you get taken to the room with no problem.

This is NOT true of ALL rooms, just true of some of them.  There doesn't seem to be any way to predict which rooms will cause the problem and which won't, though the rooms that cause the problem cause it consistently.  (That is, every time you log on, it's the same rooms you cannot find.)

Second, subscribing to the "Player Creation Log" list yields no results.  That is, the mailbox doesn't show up and mail doesn't arrive when new players are created.

We have tried reinstalling the software from the ground up (instead of updating our 2.1 MOO), but the problems persist.  Any ideas?

Thanks for any and all help,
-Laura

This has come up before. (Are there list archives? That would rule.) MOO requires minimal hardware. Surprisingly little. Darn near anything would work. And I do mean anything -- our MOO server is a six year old IBM C10 (PowerPC 601, like a PowerMac 7100). If you have a $1000 budget you should have no problem getting a great server including a backup solution of some kind (CD-RW or similar). I rank these items in order of importance: 1) Quality 100 Mb Ethernet card, preferably on switched 100 Mb network 2) Removable media or some sort of networked backup solution and enough media to do backups and enough time and energy to INSURE your MOO is backed up 3) At least 2 GB of SCSI, not IDE, disk. If you do a full install of most distributions of Linux you'll have room to spare even with a 2GB drive. You could skip a lot of stuff, but make sure to install the development tools or compiling will be tough :) 4) Quality hardware -- e.g. avoid no-name or "found" components unless you have time and energy to hack 'em together 5) At least 96 MB of RAM, but hopefully 128 MB or more 6) A 200 MHz or faster processor. cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From rtk@stargate.net Tue Jun 19 12:16:12 2001 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Tue, 19 Jun 2001 12:16:12 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id DD335288AD for ; Tue, 19 Jun 2001 12:16:10 -0500 (CDT) Received: from smtp2.mx.pitdc1.stargate.net (smtp2.mx.pitdc1.stargate.net [206.210.69.142]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 557E71A027A for ; Tue, 19 Jun 2001 10:48:49 -0500 (CDT) Received: (qmail 16474 invoked from network); 19 Jun 2001 15:47:54 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO t4k7j9) (144.80.92.145) by smtp2.mx.pitdc1.stargate.net with SMTP; 19 Jun 2001 15:47:54 -0000 From: "Rob Koch Jr." To: Subject: [encore] Re: Box recommendations Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 11:53:43 -0400 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2911.0) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 Importance: Normal In-Reply-To: X-archive-position: 83 X-listar-version: Listar v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: rtk@stargate.net Precedence: bulk Reply-to: encore@utdallas.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Listar version 1.0.0 X-List-ID: X-list: encore Hi Peter. What we have at Northwoods is a lot of overkill, a pretty decked-out Sparc Ultra 5 running Solaris, but the MOO is only a side process of this machine which serves as the nameserver for a computer lab's network. I have run my personal "test moo" on as little as a PII 233 running linux with no problems whatsoever. It had a 5 gig hard drive, but the MOO only took up maybe 7 megs at most, with NorthWoodsMOO taking up about 35 megs. As for a minimum, I would say about 250 Mhz processor, 32 megs ram, 2 gig HD , and a power supply to power it and case to put it in, some kind of monitor, keyboard and mouse to use the terminal with . MOOs don't require a lot of processor power or RAM or anything... serving the web doesn't either if you only expect say, 50-75 users at most. My choice for Linux is Madrake, with someone who knows Linux or some good books to help get you started learning , and an Apache web server which is a bit hard to learn but is free and runs wonderfully. -Allen Tipper , Programmer/administrator of the NorthWoodsMOO, http://www.hu.mtu.edu:8000 On Tue, 19 Jun 2001, Rob Koch Jr. wrote: > Hi Peter. > > I don't know about minimum and optimal, but I have the following: > > Dell Optiplex > > 2 -- 40 gig Hard drives (haven't figured out how to set up a mirror yet) > 933 megahertz chip speed > 256 meg ram > > Total cost for hardware was about $2,000. > > Using Red Hat Linux and Apache -- Pay careful attention to your Linux > support. That machine, linnell.english.purdue.edu, is a Pentium something or other (need to look that up, but it's about two years old) with 256M of RAM and a 6G hard drive. We also have a tape drive for backup but we're going to be switching to a CD-RW at some point in the future. We're running RedHat but will most likely be switching to Slackware whenever the sysadmin who knows more than me has enough free time. Apache is our webserver. linnell runs the MOO, wwwthreads (web based discussion fora), mailman (mailing list server) and serves as a small file server and the backup webserver. Its twin, flansburgh.english.purdue.edu, runs the webserver for Purdue's professional writing program, rhetoric and composition program and acts as the host for www.writinginstructor.com. Well, we're working on the symptom, not the problem, but in that we're getting closer. We're still working on the code for the conversational bot we have on MOOville, trying to make something like the "botwar" possible without tasks stacking up. Not many ways to do it without forking, and not many ways that ain't ugly... but if (length(queued_tasks()) >= 300) task_to_zap = queued_tasks()[1]; taskid_to_zap = task_to_zap[1]; kill_task(taskid_to_zap); endif Seems like an absurdly high limit, I know... cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From Lirvin@ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU Thu Jun 21 12:09:22 2001 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Thu, 21 Jun 2001 12:09:23 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 663A4288A5 for ; Thu, 21 Jun 2001 12:09:20 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 85B451A02E5 for ; Thu, 21 Jun 2001 12:01:11 -0500 (CDT) Received: from Ir191470 [10.1.11.44] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Thu, 21 Jun 2001 12:01:01 CST From: "Lennie Irvin" To: Subject: [encore] Porter Help Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 13:07:10 -0700 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Importance: Normal X-archive-position: 87 X-listar-version: Listar v1.0.0 Sender: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu Errors-to: encore-bounce@utdallas.edu X-original-sender: Lirvin@accd.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-to: encore@utdallas.edu List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Listar version 1.0.0 X-List-ID: X-list: encore Does anyone have access to the help files for the SR Porter verbs such as @netcopy. (ie connect someone foobar) [Type a line of input or `@abort' to abort the command.] connect Lennie Lingua [item in database] Remote Object Number? [Type a line of input or `@abort' to abort the command.] #377 [# of object I wish to port from Lingua] Local Object Parent? (defaults to #1) [Type a line of input or `@abort' to abort the command.] #388 [number of object that it will be in AlaMOO] ==> Trying http://ranger.accd.edu port 7000 ... ==> Unabled to connect to remote MOO. I'm not sure why I am not connecting to the remote MOO (ie Lingua). Am I doing something wrong in this sequence? I assume that the Host is the home computer that I am porting TO and that the "CONNECTION STRING" is to Lingua where I am porting FROM. I have a feeling that the problem is in the Connection String part of the sequence. I am a programmer in Lingua, so I think I have the right level clearance to port. Can anyone help me figure this out. Thanks! If the value is 0 the date is the epoch. (Yeah, seems weird, but it's a neat way to express time in an absolute way, and if you were born on 1/1/1970, bully for you!) What does ;time() return in the MOO? Should be something a bit more than 993571363 (that's the time now). It's possible that time actually works OK on your MOO (server box) but is just being recorded wrongly on objects (and is thus returning 0). You may want to fool with $time_utils and see what works and what doesn't. I suspect the problem isn't with time itself but the way the MOO is recording or reporting object's creation times. time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so, cbd. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bradley Dilger http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~dilger/ From lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Thu Jun 28 11:12:42 2001 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Thu, 28 Jun 2001 11:12:43 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 712972889F for ; Thu, 28 Jun 2001 11:12:36 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 94E0E1A0A08 for ; Thu, 28 Jun 2001 11:12:35 -0500 (CDT) Received: from gh208-lirvin [10.11.14.170] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Thu, 28 Jun 2001 11:12:27 CST Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20010628231014.00959340@accdvm.accd.edu> X-Sender: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu (Unverified) X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 23:10:14 -0500 To: encore@utdallas.edu From: lirvin@accdvm.accd.edu Subject: [encore] rmwords BOT? You are probably typing the actual word, when instead you should type the number of the word. RMWORD from BOTNAME When you type seeword botname, you see all the words and which number they have. Here should be the number of the word you want to remove. Do a seewords botname to get the number... So to remove the 10th word in the list you'd do: rmword 10 from botname Hope that helps, Sarah. -- http://www.myplace.uklinux.net/ From Lirvin@ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU Fri Jun 29 05:58:23 2001 Received: with LISTAR (v1.0.0; list encore); Fri, 29 Jun 2001 05:58:24 -0500 Return-Path: Delivered-To: encore@nobel.utdallas.edu Received: from ns0.utdallas.edu (null-smtp.utdallas.edu [192.168.1.1]) by nobel.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91241288B1 for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2001 05:58:21 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (accdvm.accd.edu [209.184.119.1]) by ns0.utdallas.edu (Postfix) with SMTP id 8C19D1A03FA for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2001 05:58:18 -0500 (CDT) Received: from Ir191470 [10.1.11.54] by ACCDVM.ACCD.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R4a) via TCP with SMTP ; Fri, 29 Jun 2001 05:58:09 CST From: "Lennie Irvin" To: Subject: [encore] Re: rmwords BOT?
